Other than Naruto who only trained for 3 techniques. "Rasengan, Rasen-Shuriken, and Sage Mode" everyone got powerups offscreen.I finally caught up and binged the show over the past few weeks and this is my NUMBER ONE complaint about the show. The new ninjas get their abilities basically randomly from episode to episode instead of training hard for it like Naruto did in the originals, so when they show us something new it's like their pulling a new ability completely out of their ass.
The development of boruto himself has been interesting but they took him into a different direction than I expected or wanted. I didn't watch the movie or watch the manga, I thought the headband in the first ep meant he was gonna become a rogue ninja, or travel with Sasuke, so I was getting ready for that, that would've been good, but now I'm not so sure that will happen.

Learning to walk on water, sure that was OG Naruto though and more episodes apart form the rest than Boruto has even had. Chakra elements is rasen-shuiken training and that was only Naruto. The bell thing was a test I don't think any actual techniques came from they just realized they needed teamwork. And Naruto learned shadow clones mostly off screen in 1 day in episode 1. Don't think there really is a so on and so forth tbh. Naruto was written to be a loser and Boruto is a genius as far as I know so why would he need to do the same level of work as Naruto to be better than people?Your forgetting things like them learning how to water walk, getting their chakra elements, the bell training, Naruto refining his shadow clones, so on and so forth.
It probably took a good 40-50 episodes before Naruto was at the same level as his peers. It felt like Boruto took 10. But i'm probably exaggerating, haven't seen the show in like 3 years. I'm sure a lot has changed since I made that post.

The toad summoning I'll give you, but element training was 100% rasenshuriken training and the balloon training was rasengan training. If you split shippuden and OG there is even less training going on. Again all the other characters gained power ups off screen. I guess if you can't see they are different characters and that this isn't supposded to be OG Naruto part 2 then it just isn't your cup of tea. Fans are panning it because it's a show full of fillers when they want to see some level of story progressionI was mostly referring to og naruto in that post anyway. There is a so on and so forth. He doesn't learn rasenshuriken in OG naruto when he originally was doing chakra element training. They spent an ep or 2 on wall climbing, they spent episodes with him learning summoning training with toads, there's the chakra channeling with the balooon, etc.
I didn't watch long enough to know if Boruto was a genius or anything, all I'm saying is that it feels less organic because it feels like he's not putting in the work that we saw Naruto put in. Again, it's been 3 years since I've seen the show so I don't know what's changed, but that was my complaint about the show when I watched it.
At the age Boruto and crew are at, they are much more advanced than Naruto and crew were. Is this a problem? Maybe not. It's a logical progression probably, but to an audience that grew up on Naruto it feels a bit cheap. Which is why fans of the original show are panning it. It feels more shippuden than OG naruto which is why it's not "restoring the feeling" for me. Maybe someday I'll come back to it.
