Is there any benefit to purchasing TVIX instead of trading VIX options? I've never traded vol before, so not really sure what's going on there.

Probably not. I don't know much about options so i trade the stock.

The thing with these etfs is they buy the short term futures on the vix. So they always have a monthly cost of buying next month's (or the month after) futures. This causes the etf to drop in price.

Look at long term charts (or even all time charts) of TVIX all it does is go down in value. When it gets too low they do stock splits to keep it propped up. I learned that lesson a long time ago.

If youre buying this etf i would always be looking at the vix futures. The futures have been in a contango for a long time. With that contango you could see some spikes in the price but it will quickly come back down. You'd have to make very short term trades to go long this.

Yup. I only flip it. Never hold it for more than a couple days at most
