AAA gaming hasn’t always been that. Rocksteady went from making Arkham to Suicide Squad. Everything can’t be a live service because they’ll start to cannibalize themselves. Consumers are starting to reject some of these live service games.

Rocksteady is literally only known for making iterative batman sequels. Them making a suicide squad game is counter to your point of publishers relying on sequels and remakes.

They branched out from making a single player AAA game to a live service game because publishers want most games to have live service functionality. That isn’t them really branching out it’s them chasing a live service cash cow. It’s also a game in the Arkham universe that continues the plot from the previous game.

Kotick has turned Activision into a CoD factory. He certainly isn’t taking risk either.

No, its literally them branching out and making a totally different kind of game and not just sequels for batman, you’re just mad they aren’t making the type of game you think they should

AAA games basically need a built in fanbase.

Either a long time popular game franchise

Or a license like Spiderman

Or they need the backing of a platfrom holder.

New and risky ideas just aren’t worth it in the AAA space, unless there’s some advanced monitization strategy like gamepass or DLC, GAAS stuff.

The game has Batman in it and continues from the prior Batman games they made. It is literally the product AAA games have become.

Live service game that attempts to pander to single player gamers check. Plays it safe by existing in a franchise that is already released check.

This is the future of single player games. Them being bolted on to live service games.

Thats like saying because dark knight and batman vs superman made a bunch of money that suicide squad is going to make money. No matter which way you spin it, suicide squad is a major departure from everything they’ve done and it IS risky, going by the public response to it.

You just don’t like it so you are finding reasons to say it doesnt count

It’s a mitigated risk.

They got Batman, and they are reaching toward a GAAS model.

Much better headstart than a brand new single player IP

Even if the game doesn’t blow up, they probably aren’t gonna lose money on it. They definitely will live to make another game.

One bad/underperforming $220M game and the entire studio could be cooked.

That doesn’t refute anything I’ve said

The idea was that it was less risky than another Arkham game, and they were probably correct.

I very much doubt that they thought a multiplayer suicide game from a studio who doesn’t make multiplayer games wasn’t a bigger risk than making another batman

We see the economics of AAA games.

You ask an investor “give me $220m and 6 years up front, and we will spend 7 years trying to make a profit”

or

We will spend 7 years SPENDING $220m and recouping the money along the way.

Which one are they gonna chose?

A new batman game wouldn’t have taken as long to make as this game has
