Is anything coming close to this show after the 3 Kings (Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men
) came through and shook things up?
BE has the combo of elite writing, acting, characters and setting to do very special things. I have Breaking Bad 4th after the three you named just off of having told us a great story with defined characters and character arcs while most of the other great shows out now are still early into their runs. Boardwalk has a ton of potential to be 4th imo, and is already an epic show. It just lacks...soul, for want of a better word. Scenes like the ones between Capone and his deaf son stand out not just because of their brilliance but because of their rarity. It can still come off as just a show about gangsters killing each other with some great dialogue and period wardrobe/setting. I always had no problem with them killing off Jimmy, but they haven't given us another main character getting significant/consistent airtime that we can latch onto. I don't know if Nucky, despite being a great character, is that person the audience can latch onto.

That's my objective opinion on why in general the show might not be regarded as highly as some. Me personally, I love BE (loved last season too) and look forward to watching it every week. A lot gets packed into the hour it's on and I'm into highly detailed, complicated shows. I love the 20's setting, love the large cast of characters and multiple, simultaneous storylines, love the dialogue, and love the themes. But I realize this show isn't as accessible as others (just like Mad Men):manny:

As for this episode, it's even more :wow: than the first. My island brethren, Dr. Valentin Narcisse, might be getting avi treatment once BB is over

I think its trying to be more surgical like The Wire, which didn't have much soul either.

But you can see that Sopranos and Mad Men do not lack soul.

So I think either approach works, but I understand The Wire and BE approach because the story is more important.

I feel that is one of the reasons Jimmy fingerprint will forever be on this show, because everything reminds me of him, sort of like D'Angelo Barksdale. So I think BE is unfolding very nicely.

The Wire doesn't have soul? You kidding, right? Wallace's murder. D'Angelo's murder. Season 4 was probably the most heartbreaking season of TV I've ever seen. That scene with Carver beating the shyt out of the steering wheel was so deep. Plus Bub's storyline. Damn, The Wire is untouchable. Though I really like Boardwalk Empire.

The Wire was very surgical like BE, but I did not say The Wire didn't have soul but that was not its aim compared to Mad Men and Sopranos.

Wow... great episode. First off let me dedicate this song to Chalky...

:umad:

Now to some other stuff. Most of it's been covered but I"m really interested in the FBI storyline. I guess they're setting up the prerequisite for Nucky's eventual downfall. Van Alden's story is interesting too... his wife out there coppin expensive couches on layaway and shyt.

Did anybody peep Chalky's son-in-law starting to be more into his side of things. His dad was like "You seem to have a taste for the finer things all of a sudden."

he also said i cant anymore

think hes done killing now, also he let that guy survive even though he was paid to kill him

harrow is on the ropes atm brehs:lupe:

Dude was dead when the other guy called. I wasn't sure who killed him.

fukk ya'll villian of the week dikk riders.
Chalky is still that nikka

nikkas stopped stanning Chalky with a quickness. :heh: I never was a Chalky fan like that. I like the character but he aint nothin but a foot soldier. Always has been. Although I respect him.

My favorite actor on BWE?

And he's playing such an honorable brother?

For now...

The show is incredible....

.....but, just as in season 3, there are so many different threads in the story that each gets relatively little attention in a single episode. So rather than getting one long story across a season, like Mad Men or The Wire, we usually get multiple smaller/shorter stories.

I think BE is the rare show that actually benefits from being binge watched, just because they end up ignoring story arcs for entire episodes at a time.

The lack of van alden last season was :upsetfavre: but he did have a lot of film work so im guessing thats why he wasnt on the show much. i really dont have a problem with the arcs being so sporadic, like rothstein, who i think shines in only being brought in here and there, but more having a problem with who they choose to focus on. Margaret last season was just unbearable to watch. no one gave a fukk what she was doing and in the scheme of the show, really wasnt necessary in moving the story forward. i know she's gonna drop in later on but im hoping they realized substituting her time with chalky/lucky/capone/van alden will have people giving high praise again. Im hoping gillian doesnt have too much airtime cuz she honestly is meaningless unless the guy who shes with now isnt exactly who he says he is.
