Yeah. It's explained in ep.4.

Choi was strong because he used to be a goon himself and had a strong team of knifers. Kim Myeong-gil says a lot of gangs were afraid of Choi and co. back in the day because he wiped out rivals.

As for the stabbing I guess they were none fatal stabs , the dumpster broke his fall and his assistant was still around to help him escape.

I'm happy to see it's getting renewed, but they need to clean up some things because it's clear the quality dipped when the actress Kim Sae Ron (the granddaughter) had to leave. Anyway, def going to watch season 2 because the action in this show was too good
