Can someone explain to me how review embargos are legal in video gaming... it makes absolutely no sense given the freedom of press?

It's simple the publishers are supplying the games early, to get the game early you have to agree not to review the game until they say. The supposed benefit is that everyone who is reviewing the game is on equal footing, aka people don't rush through the game to be the first review. IF a website doesn't sign the NDA then it will have to get the game on day of release and have to rush through it to try and get a review out quickly
