The story isn't weak, but it's not that great either.

Basically you get out of it what you put into it. You could play the entire game and not really have an idea of what's going on, or you can take the time to talk to every NPC and read every item description to try to piece it together yourself. There's tons of fan theory out there about the story, discovering/interpreting the story is more entertaining than the story itself.

There are check points.........but you have to beat a boss to get to them
