Some Black people actually have Native American ancestry, I don't know why immigrants and pan-africanist find that so offensive.

Its true. But to be honest, many of them do not. There's genetic native roots and cultural. The Cherokee, Creek and Choctaw nation in particular kept slaves and brought them with them on the Trail of Tears and other forced migrations. Which is why there's such a strong black presence in Arkansas, Oklahoma and North Texas. Some of those slaves were given tribal status for legal reasons but were not ethnically Native. Which is how lots of those "we are part Native" family stories get passed along.

Also, there's the issue with many black families having members that were products of rape or even consensual interracial relationships. And back then it might have been socially easier to just say you were "part-native" to explain your features.
