Around 10-12 years ago, what used to be a "nerd" became a "loser", and "nerds" just were people that are smart and read books.

In the 80's - 90's, nerds were dudes with no social skills and no fashion sense. But it's something different now.

Yes. People sometimes get called lames for not partying/smoking. Some people who don't party/smoke/do drugs call themselves that as well. It's like them saying "If I'm a lame for not doing drugs and partying, then I am proud to be one".
