Nah, it was. The late 80's, is when I started seeing things changing to the point where I didn't hear women talk about getting a man take care of them but they were saying he better play his part. I remember the song "aint nothing going on but the rent" by Gwen Guthrie being their anthem. Listen to that song, and it explains women getting money, and starting to tell men they BETTER play their part. When I used to hear the song, I used to think it was shytting on men who weren't rich, but the older I got, I understood it. But the mid 90's that turned into these chicks turning into divas, and just being in fantasy land, Lil Kim, and Foxy Brown were the epitome of this. The music really expressed what was going on back in the day.


Before that(early 80' and before), from what older women, and men, tell me, it was about getting married, and having a man take care of you, that doesn't mean they didn't work, but the man did take care of most of the bills. They could do that back then because shyt wasn't as expensive as it is now, and less things to buy. Even if you didn't get married, the idea was to take care of your chick. It was for me, and everyone I knew, but I seen chicks would abuse it, and think you were her slave, so I would stop it if she was on some bullshyt. A lot of guys didn't, and those are the guys who would talk that "real man" shyt, but because it wouldn't make sense, then they would talk that "my parents did it' shyt or "I'm from____". The real reason is they didn't want that p*ssy to go away, and be back on the street searching for some new shyt!

If you mean home's being passed down, then that depends on who you are talking about. For example I didn't have a home passed down, or most people I know from Brooklyn, because we were from the city(lived in apartments), but a lot of my older family members from down south did. The home ownership rate was 42% in 1970 for blacks, its still the same now, so it coincides with what I've seen growing up. That rate needs to rise, but considering a lot of blacks live major cities where the houses costs way too much, it might not happen anytime soon.
