She's not lying for the most part, Tech is bigger than programming/work w/ dev and people have cemented that programming is only option. there's more jobs than that, marketing/advertisment, management etc.

Why were they at tech bootcamps if they went to MIT and Standford?

Are you still working as a cloud engineer at that one company in NYC?

Same thing as going to business school for an MBA (except much less prestigious). It’s a career switch. If you majored in History at Stanford then did law school and became a Lawyer or in Engineering at MIT then went on to work as a Petroleum Engineer, you might go to a coding boot camp to show tech companies your interest in that field. Obviously the non-tech History Lawyer guy needs the coding boot camp more than the tech adjacent Engineering guy but that’s why they go.

I swear to god people make things soooo complicated. Go to college and network man. That’s the formula geez. Folks stay hustling backwards. If you a first gen college student join a frat as well.

My supervisor said he set up a booth at my schools (an HBCU) career fair and NOBODY showed up. Let’s keep it a stack nobody gives a fukk about finding a job until Sallie Mae come callin :russ:

And all that “you need to know how to code” bullshyt it dead too. Most of that development shii is drag and drop with programs like talend and other shyt.

Folks in tech are extremely self important and be over explaining shyt to make themselves and their jobs seem more important than they are.

But this is 2022 ain’t nobody hiring you without no college degree in tech. Yo ass gonna be on geek squad, help desk, or jumping from contract to contract listening to the “college is a scam” crew:sadcam:

Let’s keep it a buck unless yo ass got mad projects on your belt and a old head to vouch for you you’ll start as a consultant then work your way up to a software tester then either become a PM or a developer. But the problem is folks with 20 years of experience make it seem like they just made 100k overnight confusing nikkas.

But then again let’s keep it a stack nobody wants to work their way up anymore nikkas want the success and accolades ASAP :skip:

Im not gonna debate but this aint true. My bro just got hired as QA Dev. No degree. If you can prove your skills you can make it. I hate this because i usually only hear black people saying it.

Ehh she’s only half right. I follow dozens of the black in tech folks and alot of people are very open about them not being actual tech people. These roles are still very important, speaking as someone who’s been in tech over 12 years.

You also don’t need alot of coding experience or any at all for high paying tech jobs. I’ve had multiple 6 figure offers over the past year and haven’t taken one coding test. I also don’t have a degree.

Bootcamps and certs will get you in the door without a degree but without experience you will always be a bottom of the barrel candidate and have to really be able to wow folks in the interviews. Alot of people don’t understand this and get mad at recruiters when they usually have the least say in the matter.

That’s because there’s a staff shortage :russ:
These companies are desperate for people.
But I’m giving the practical solution that a lot of people these days don’t wanna hear. B/c we live in the clout is more important than money era.

That’s why shawty was mad y’all nikkas stay selling dreams. For every one nikka hired 100s more were turned down.

Bottom paragraph is facts but that degree gets you internships that get you in the door to get experience. All those internship programs are for recent college grads/college students.

But a lotta nikkas just want to say they made it with no degree to have a story to tell:snoop::whoa:

I've been seeing this scam.

Black women talking about "how I broke into tech" when they're really just recruiters/onboarding/hr or some project management role working for a tech company and are not doing real higher paying tech jobs. But then they'll use the real tech jobs when referencing potential salary earnings smh

Nah. Has nothing to do with clout. Someone learning code with no background is tough. Someone then being able to have a good interview is even tougher. That aint a shortcut and takes time.
People out here changing careers and getting in the door. But you do have to work your way into other things if you want more money or have dif interest. But thats the norm for any career so idk what ur point in saying this is.
All this "reality" talk is bs and not reality. If you in the industry you know hella people who got in through self taught or a bootcamp training. Like I said i only hear this from Black folk. It's like we wanna discourage people from trying abd make things harder than they are. You can't sell dreams if people understand the work.

I disagree bro. Alot of ways to get experience without actual job experience. Tech is extremely open. You need nothing but a computer with internet to start learning to code and more importantly to start building portfolios that you can display publicly. That’s more important to alot of people than saying you interned for X company for a few months. They’re usually not willing to teach you coding or the technical background of your role but if you can demonstrate that you know how to code or whatever then they will teach you the development process.

This being said, the person with an internship and/or college and a nice portfolio will likely always be considered over you if you lack any of those. But the great thing about the current market is that there is such a large demand that the numbers still usually work in your favor.

Exactly. Im not putting down degrees at all. But that isn't the only way. Tech IS super open right now and skills are a trump card.

They aren’t doing it like that no more bro. You’ll spend thousands of dollars on boot camps and shyt before you even get tot he point where they find something that worth it.

Most of these companies know that most certs are trash and worthless.

Most roles need like 6 years experience as well. But I don’t really care it’s not my life.

But if you can’t study in a structured environment what makes you think you gonna self study :what:

Don’t get me wrong it’s easy as hell to work your way up in tech but you can skip a lot of stress by having that piece of paper.
