a black community on the west coast of michigan influenced the city not to sell land to some white dude who wanted to build a golf course. the golf course was no benefit to them.
this dude tried everything but the black community refused.

10+ years later when snyder was governor, snyder helped put that same guy as the mayor of that city. and as mayor he bought the land built the golf course and drove the black community out of there.

i'm giving the story from what thsi one white democrat was telling me. i can get the name of the city and name of the mayor.

cacs are not to be trusted.

It's better than nothing there's no Trader Joe's in NYC area as far as I know.
:wtf:

This statement kinda blows me. Why do we fight so hard to maintain low income housing, instead of trying to attract middle and upper class BLACKS into the area. I'm not saying we can't do both, but the fights to maintain a lower level on the totem pole see backwards. When are we going to raise or standard of living?

You guys really need to stop with these stupid generalizations all the time. I don't know what the exact socioeconomic situation in the story is but when these types of businesses (more often than not "high end" franchises) come in they don't benefit the original communities that were there originally. These businesses lead to a wave of gentrification where the marginalized group is forced out of what were once their communities. If these communities were high on the totem pole this wouldn't be happening in the first place, there wouldn't be subsidies, small businesses would fight them, zoning regulations, not enough market share, etc etc etc.

But what's there now? Are there ANY businesses? I live in a black ghost town bro. We would kill for a Trader Joes.

Well first of all the source is some right wing/ neocon circle jerk ... so who the hell knows. There's a link to the Oregonian that doesn't exactly have a lot in.

op?
:camby:

They could be referring to ne portland?(they are) It was a bit empty but literally ten minutes away walking it's the nicest part of the city(downtown). I've only been to Portland once. You can walk across the whole city easily. Portland is a boutique city in my eyes, they have access to everything at arms length from what I saw and their metro is very inexpensive.

Most of the elitist liberals like @88m3 criticizing Trader Jones for "taking advantage" of the poor black community themselves live in white communities.

Getting a building/land given to you by the Government for less than a third of it's assessed value is a blatant theft of taxpayer money.

there's only 3 trader joes... all in manhattan... 1 fukking borough.

anyways if trader joes not gonna be integral to the black community and help it out and displace them, then can anyone blame black residents for wanting to keep their property values stable so they wont be priced out?
