This might be a wild take but BET shouldn't be cool with their presenters being assaulted on stage either. OP is sitting here suggesting that it takes a herculean effort to not slap someone for saying words basically leaning in to a stereotype white people have been labeling us with for centuries. Black people are not judged by the same measuring stick as white people are in this country and it's long past time we understand this and move accordingly.
If that means minimizing your interactions with white folk, cool. But Willard Smith chose a path in life that requires him to be in spaces with white people, while doing business with white people and appealing to their sensibilities. Willard also knows what comes with that path, he's accepted those conditions and has played the game by their rules hence his spotless record. White people are also showing him and others how quick your perfect track record can be rendered irrelevant if you get out of bounds.
You can choose to live a life where your decisions and actions are less governed by the "white gaze" but if you choose a path where it does matter, you must also accept what comes with choosing that path.
