OP is sitting here suggesting that it takes a herculean effort to not slap someone for saying words basically leaning in to a stereotype white people have been labeling us with for centuries. Now imagine being the star of one of the most positive and thoughtful Black movies there has been in a long time. Nothing but universal critical acclaim playing the father of 2 of the most influential Black women in sports as their younger selves. Honoring both families in the process. This night is a coronation ceremony essentially a maybe a quantum shift who knows.

This wasn't just an event for white people the entire world was watching and there is no excuse for what Will did. It wouldn't be ok at the BET awards either.

It's been pointed out time and time again that when Black people win these awards it's more often than not for roles where the character is both Black AND dysfunctional. Jadakiss mentions this in his song Why which was released in 2004.

My point is that if Black people volunteer to be a part of that world, they are also accepting what comes with it which means playing by white people's rules and vying for the (white) awards that will validate them as actors and open up more opportunities to them.
