@Afrodroid @Malta @Cynic @horse. kills @4fossa

Coli ignorance aside, #confessiontime, sometimes I pray Tais Araújo and Lázaro Ramos never split up. :sadcam: I was sure she was a bedwench since Chica da Silva, and I was sure foguinho was the pinacle of c00nery off of cobras e lagartos. But seeing them join forces in real life and stand for their blackness as a power couple...shyt damn near brought a tear to my eye. :mjcry: Y'alls country tries it's damn hardest to erase blackness, but there are still fighters over there. Word to Sêu Jorge too. :wow:

This thread was a dope look for afro-brazilians. Not for the replies, but for the story itself. :wow:

Edit: Also, where has the homie @4fossa been at? Been a minute since I've seen him post.

Where can I read more on this?

The best documentary on this is called "Brazil in Black & White" where they show how some pardo's have tried to claim blackness for the sole reason of this getting this educational affirmative action benefit, you had people who would otherwise not ever want the word afro to be used in the same sentence as their name suddenly claiming 'black' to benefit from affirmative action. The 'black' classification became sought after because the Affirmative Action program was being implemented at the University of Sao Paulo, it's like the Harvard of Brazil and it's a public university so if you test in, tuition is free. Affirmative Action meant that they would hold some spots for black students, even if they didn't test in the top 11,000 of all test takers...keep in mind that around 200,000 students take this test to try and enter USP each year.

Essentially what happened was, the government stepped in and ended up instituting a system where you had to submit a picture/video of yourself and describe your ancestral background to qualify as 'black'...it bought up a debate about the Pardo classification and visually defining 'blackness' that I think was very interesting. For example, you had this one girl with died blonde hair and super fair skin trying to claim 'blackness' who ended up being rejected, I think she was upset about it because based on her socio-economic status she considered herself black even though visibly, she wasn't.

And of course you have those average middle-class whites who are worried that being average suddenly won't be good enough anymore. They feel like they are 'losing spots' at Brazils best university due to affirmative action.

I can't find an available video right now, but will post if I can find something online.

Lol naw man, I don't think that's what the article intended to say. Black Brazilians love AAs too man. You'll get nothing but love if you visit and kick it with them. I literally got taking in by a Black Brazilian family in Sao Paulo for months and they cooked and washed my clothes like I was their son lol. They got their c00ns and self hating Blacks just like us but you can't paint them all that way. Not to mention their country is just on some other shyt when it comes to speaking out and protesting. The Rio police just assassinated a sista who spoke out against the corruption.
"Compared with African Americans, black Brazilians have always felt a very strong connection to their African roots. "

Not that I give a fukk but what does this quote mean then:pachaha:nikkas can't even scratch they own ass without bringing up AAs

This is cool. Seems nikkaz over here were only concerned with wearing African garments to take selfies at the theatre instead of trying to get on some empowerment shyt.

The Black Brazilian celebrities probably stayed away. They real :mjpls: once they get a little fame.

The point as I read it was that Afro-Brazilians, though prideful of their African heritage as we AA’s are, haven’t been able to promote it in the mainstream like we have. The article also compared our outlook on economics and theirs.

In the context of the article I understand them bringing up AA’s. Brazil, with its large Black population, similar issues with a racist power structure that runs the country, etc. you can make a lot of parallels between both populations.
