Ya know, im kinda irritated by Magic Mike XXL's hype. But Chocolate City had so little talk outside of the black media outlets, if it got any beyond Tyson Beckford leashed up by Britney Spears in Las Vegas.

Other than Chocolate City being the male version of Players Club (from what i gathered from the preview) its the same fukking movie! A movie about male strippers. But Magic Mike is all over the fukking place. Chocolate City is prolly a week shy from being in Red Box and on Netflix. Why is that?

The same can be said with Zane's Addicted vs Fifty Shades of Grey. It wasnt the same plot per se, Addicted was about sexual addiction and kinky shyt & consequences that came along with the decisions made by the main character. (at least the book was that way, the movie was seriously watered down) Anyway, you get Fifty Shades of Grey, a movie about a prude who sexual boundaries are tested and the kinky shyt comes with it but it gets hype EVERYWHERE! Beyonce re-did Crazy in Love for it it! The Weeknd did a song for it and it is STILL being whored out on the fukking radio. Both movies are about sexual limitations being pushed but one gets more media attention than the other. Why? fukking white Hollywood....

Lets talk about this. Yeah, its more female aimed because its about these movies but I'd still like to get the #movieclub to chime in on it.

A lot of it aside from whatever racial component we can throw at it, has to do with money and notoriety. Magic mike featured a big name star and was directed by an Oscar nominated director and was backed by a big studio. Same with the Zane movies vs fifty shades, except fifty shades was also the movie version of a book that's a legitimate phenomenon around the country. It's the same argument you find on film blogs and amongst film journalists of why can't more people see movies like no country for old men or there will be blood rather than seeing the the fancy shiny blockbuster.

I feel you. It all comes down to money. Each and every time. Even Tarantino doesn't get big budgets behind his movies and doesn't get wide releases.

Also I can't speak for any of these movies other than magic mike because it's the only one I've seen but the rules are all the same. A low budget independent studio that puts out a Zane movie isn't going to compete with a movie put out by universal in terms of budget or marketing.

The question is though how do we fix it? How do we make it so that a movie put out by an indie with black names attached gets the same amount of attention as a big studio? Or better yet how do you get a movie like chocolate city to have the same distribution? How do you convince a big studio to pick it up? Normally you gotta go to the right producing partners and in terms of black producers we got Oprah, will, cube, and spike off the top of my head; they each have their own production companies and can get any big studio to listen.

Maybe taking the Robert Townsend route like he did for Hollywood Shuffle, yeah not many can fund it with their own credit card but if he did it 26 yeas ago it can happen again. We have to make that lightening strike twice, even if the white man says its impossible.

*yeah i gotta get on my black militant status right about now*

But there are avenues to us now that Townsend didn't have. I just named a handful of black producers with their own companies. Why don't they pick up the films? I'm not knocking cube for it but just using him as an example: as opposed to having cubevision produce barbershop 3 why not produce a movie with some new talent or just talent on the fringe? That's how Dope got its wide release; puffy and pharell and I'm sure someone else who's name I'm forgetting, hopped on and decided to contribute money to the cause

Well thats what needs to be done, go to multiple people who will take the chance and fund it. By the way, what was Dope's numbers over the weekend? Did it do good?

It didn't do that well from what I read. Buzz just couldn't translate over Pixar and dinosaurs. I feel like it'll make up for it on home video though
