The writers were on some bullshyt. They want to make Karl gay, but they don't want to go full trope so they create the illusion of a grey area for viewers like "buuut you never know "

I think you and others are missing the point. The show is about technology, who knows what kind of weird relationships will end up being possible/probable as a result of changing the way we interact.
