This next Black Martial Arts legend played one of the starring roles in that very movie.
His name is Sensei Willie Akbar Williams aka “The Bear Killer”
Sensei Akbar is a legendary Kyokushin fighter. Together, he and my instructor Sensei Kenny trained under legendary Kyokushin Shihan Shigeru Oyama, gaining international notoriety in the Kyokushin world.
A few years ago Sensei Akbar actually paid a visit to the dojo for a fun, informative, yet brutal Kyokushin seminar. One of the best Kyokushin moments in my 5 years of training. I am pictured in the middle. Even at close to 6’6” tall in old age he still makes you feel puny.

Bear was definitely sedated. This was more of just a promo for hype, of sorts. A kind of carrying of the torch if you will of Mas Oyama’s infamous fight vs a bull(not sedated).
Personally it’d still take a bit of nerve for me to get in there and toss it up with a bear, though.
I guess when you’re just a big ole man-bear yourself as Sensei Akbar was, it’s just another stunt/promo day in the park for you.
