Here’s why I say this: I know I’m not the only one on here that surfed and chatted on Blackplanet back in the day - early 2000’s
If you went to the chat room area, you’d know that you could see the number of people in the rooms before you clicked, looked like this:

The GAY CHAT STAYED AT 100+ EVERY DAY ALL DAY FOR YEARS. SOMETIMES IT WOULD HAVE 230+ PEOPLE IN THERE
It was the only chat room that had that type of traffic on BP - maybe the 20 something’s was close, but the GAY chat was always full no matter the time of day.
I was addicted to the intellectual chat room and sometimes we’d talk about it, the sistas would never go in there, some would jokingly say they were scared to see straight men they knew.
Like I said, I know I’m not the only one that saw that, I’m probably speaking on something I’m not suppose to, but dudes on here know that use to be in those chat rooms
I agree with this—I never even used those chats, but my uncle came to Chicago one weekend for a vacation. When he arrived that night at the hotel he had booked, there was some kind of secret gay downlow black convention(or event)going on. He checked out of that hotel with the quickness, and went elsewhere. He was traumatized not just by the sheer number of bm that were there. But that many of the men he saw walking around were men who you would never even assume were downlow. Men that have girlfriends, and wives.
I’ve always felt that hiv is largely a gay man disease. I honestly used to (and still to some extent) believe the disease was God’s way of punishing demonic sexual/sexual immorality.
It’s no coincidence that many gay men have hiv, and that doctors urge gay men without it to take the prep drug so they won’t get it.
That aside, there are gay men in every race. So why does the hiv rate continue to increase for black gay men, more so than other groups of gay men? The assumption is that gay bm aren’t using protection and are having sex with a lot of men without caution. But I’ve heard that gay white men are the same way. I’m now wondering if it is possible that there are simply more gay bm, within our race, than within other racial groups? Which would suppprt the idea that because there are a lot of gay bm—and some are walking around pretending to be straight, but still having gay sex—that there is a higher rate of hiv in our community.
If, that is the case, I guess I’m curious about what is causing so many bm to be gay, and why are there so many downlow black gay men as opposed to downlow white, Asian, and Latin men? Because that’s the other part of the problem. There doesn’t appear to be as many downlow white men, so they aren’t spreading the disease in high numbers to white women. So I guess the other part to it, is in 2018, when there are many openly gay bm walking around, why are there still so many downlow men who refuse to come out of the closet? People say it’s because of shaming but there is less shaming in 2018, than even a decade ago. Yet the hiv rate is increasing. Something isn’t adding up.
I know people talk about prison being the culprit. So are these straight men getting raped and contracting it in prison and passing it once they get out? Or are they going in prison straight and coming out of prison gay because they were having sex with men by choice to bust a nut? With the latter, if a man is really straight, then he would never even entertain the idea of ever having sex with men. So wtf is going on with these heterosexual men that go to prison and start having sex with men, just to have sex? I would argue that this means that they were not straight to begin with, if they are making the choice to have sex with men. So again, I’m really curious about why there are so many gay black men. What is going on? Environment, genetics, etc?
