it's a hold over from when the only intellectuals in the black community where in the church. if you think about it, during slavery, that would be the only black place that combined education and philosophy. i would say that in the 21st century, we will not have anymore "leaders" for all blacks, just leaders for groups of blacks. we now have orthodox religion, left wing academics, and afrocentric mystics all competing for some piece of the black leadership pie. the orthodox religious types get play on tv because that is all the white media establishment knows. they have the deepest roots into mainstream politics, so they matter most now. in the future, the academics will rise a little more, and the afrocentric mystics will probably always be a fringe group.
