It's a problem of perception VS. reality. If you get your view of black people from MTV, tommy sotomoyor, and worldstar. Then sure you'll have a negative outlook on black people. But in reality those images are nothing like the average black person. The average black person is middle class hard working American, just like every other race. In my opinion the only thing we can do to kill these stereotypes is to protest the networks/websites that push this agenda.

And why should all black people be lumped together?

I'm pretty sure that is what the author is getting at. Then again I never said I agree with the author, that's just my reading of it bra :manny:

Black people shouldn't all be lumped together, we don't fit in a box. This isn't one stereotype that all black people live up to. Everybody's an individual regardless of race. If you or whoever wrote this truly understood and accepted that, then there wouldn't be a need for you or any other black person to separate/distance themselves from the black community.

Nope. You misunderstood what I was saying. I didn't say ratchet black people don't exist. I said the media promotes the images of ratchet black folks. Then people project that image on all black folks.

And I really wish people would quit citing Chris rock in these conversations:snoop: he's a comedian, his stuff is supposed to be funny, not a real analysis of race relations in America.

Rock has also expressed regret for those "******s vs black people" jokes, basically denouncing them. He did that because he realized that racists/self haters were using those jokes as ammo. These bk comedians sometimes forget that it's not just black people who are listening and laughing.

In all honesty I don't follow breh :dahell:

First you said that self-hate is at an all time high and the article was c00n shyt.

Now you're arguing for individualism, which the article was arguing for. So you agree with the article? :dwillhuh:

He article is advocating that some blacks need to distance themselves from the community. I clearly don't agree with that. The fact that we are individuals goes without saying.

Norfeast groovin…
Eh, I'd say this would work at best in a personal development level. Even then he got the term wrong, Crabs in a barrel and individualism isn't quite the same and in fact, his misuse of the term is pretty irresponsible in that it threatens to reinforce a bad habit within the community if in the event this piece is taken seriously.

Some good points, some reaching, but I don't think we should ever encourage a lack of unity. Black people need unity more than ever, but this idea of individual development completely sovereign of the contemporary customs of a person is ok and should be applied for all groups so as to provide more understanding amongst ourselves and one another.
