Ok so y’all had a 2 year run attendance wise. But the Bayou Classic still draws more people. Half of the people that go to N.O. that weekend don’t even go to the game. They are too hung over from partying the night before.
https://www.google.com/amp/amp.usatoday.com/story/76448606/
CLASSIC ATTRACTION: In addition to being nationally televised on NBC, the Bayou Classic draws an estimated 250,000 people to New Orleans for the game and related attractions including the "Battle of the Bands," in which both schools' renowned marching bands try to outdo one another. The event, which also includes lectures, seminars and parties for alumni, generates an estimated $200 million in economic activity.

Magic City Classic marks 75 years of sport and spectacle
By Solomon Crenshaw Jr.

Albert J. Benifield Jr. grew up attending the Magic City Classic and loved the pageantry that accompanied the annual meeting of Alabama A&M and Alabama State at Birmingham’s Legion Field.

As an adult, Benefield, president of the Alabama A&M Alumni Association, lived for a while in New Orleans and believed there was no bigger spectacle among historically black colleges and universities than the Bayou Classic, pitting Grambling Stateagainst Southern.

But Benefield has changed his mind. “Now the Magic City Classic has overtaken the Bayou Classic,” he said, “making that the largest event for black colleges.”

Black College Living has posted on hbculifestyle.com its rankings of the biggest HBCU classics based on attendance. The Magic City Classic has been atop that list the past two years.

The 2014 edition drew 67,710. The Bayou Classic followed with 57,852 and the Southern Heritage Classic with Tennessee State and Jackson State drew 46,914.

The game at Legion Field brought in 63,874 a year ago and the Bayou Classic narrowed the gap with 62,507. The State Fair Classic, pitting Grambling State against Prairie View A&M, had 51,328 in 2015.

Those attendance figures for the Magic City Classic don’t include the throng in the parking lot around Legion Field for tailgating. Many in that crowd choose not to come into the stadium................

Anybody that has been to the Magic City Classic knows....

The 74th edition Annual Magic City Classic saw a slight decrease in attendance this year but firmly held on to its number one position. The event is historically the most attended Division I FCS game in the nation. The annual tradition between Alabama A&M University (AAMU) and Alabama State University (ASU) at Legion Field dates back to 1940’s and currently has an economic impact of over $24 million.

This year actor, Anthony Anderson was named the ambassador of the Magic City Classic. He was also the Grand Marshal of the McDonald’s Magic City Classic parade. Anderson stars in the hit ABC series “Blackish” and has appeared on several hit shows and movies in the past. In addition to the thousands of fans, the Classic is known for attracting celebrity sightings (Rubin Studdard, Juicy J, and Jeff Sessions) to the game and surrounding events. Some of these events included a block party, the Coors Light Tailgate Sunset Party, The Ford Tailgate Takeover, Alumni Pep Rally, and expo with Tom Joyner. The post-game concert featured R&B group Jagged Edge.

2. Claim 250,000 > 60k people

Incorrect...
  • 63,874 Fans(Magic city classic) > 62,507 Fans(Bayou classic)
As for the 250k claim, thats funny cause the official bayou classic web site says...

Premier New Orleans Tourism Event: The Bayou Classic draws more than 200,000 visitors to New Orleans.

- Bayou Classic | Traditions

Which is reflected in local news as well.

He said many people with Grambling and Southern ties flock to New Orleans for Thanksgiving and the many Bayou Classic events, just like Fobbs' family in the 1970s and '80s. Now, he said, it's time for those fans to step up and come to the game.
"The stat that was thrown out was roughly 200,000 people with some affiliation or another with this game will be here this weekend,'' Broussard said. "Not all those folks will be able to make it to the game. Some of them are coming down to try and wrap their Thanksgiving celebration and family reunion around it.

- Bayou Classic attendance could be on the way up with SWAC West title on the line

The game between Grambling and Southern universities is a touchdown for the city's economy. The football face-off and a full slate of events surrounding it generates at least $50 million for the economy, attracts an estimated 200,000 people and helps to fill downtown hotels. Occupancy is expected to be at 90 percent.

- Tourism bonanza continues after the Bayou Classic

Matter a fact even the official new Orleans tourism board website(that is paid by N.O. tax dollars) even states this in the official game press release by the city.

The Bayou Classic is also more than just a football game and commemorates historically-black colleges and universities. There are usually community events held during the weekend such as concerts, playground builds, job fairs and college fairs. The popular Battle of the Bands and Greek Show showcases bands, fraternities and sororities from both universities in a fierce competition of song, dance and school pride. A Fan Festival held the day before the big game includes live entertainment, vendors, games and special giveaways. An estimated 200,000 fans pour into the city every year for Bayou Classic, pumping more than $30 million into the local economy.

- http://www.neworleansonline.com/pr/releases/releases/Bayou Classic.pdf

Now lets be clear, that's 200,000 people in the entire city for bayou classic!
Now even back when the magic city classic was smaller in 2011 there was over 100k people in and around the stadium alone ....that's not including other events going on in the city and shopping/lodging in the larger metro area outside of Birmingham proper.

Galbaugh said about 66,000 made their way inside Legion Field for the game in 2011. That, he said, didn't count some 40,000 people who remained outside with tailgating festivities.

- Magic City Classic is more than just a football game

...and that was back when the event was smaller. In recent times(2016) your looking at around 200k in and around the stadium alone.

Police say the key to safety and security in and around Legion Field is knowing who is coming and going from the surrounding neighborhoods. Authorities are encouraging all the residents in the area to get an "R" pass from the stadium that helps police easily identify the residents and monitor the flow of people during the flurry of activities ahead, during and after the game.

"When you have an event as large as this, when you're talking somewhere close to over 200,000 people inside the stadium, outside the stadium, so you have alot of moving parts," Edwards said. "So, it's always great and refreshing to have local law enforcement to come in and partner with us."

- Magic City Classic 2016: Birmingham PD readies for hectic weekend at Legion Field

Police will use new technology to monitor the situation surrounding the stadium.
You expect 200,000 people inside and outside around the tailgating. That's a lot of people. Extra eyes and technology insure it goes off well like it always does,” Edwards explained. And inside, Legion Field staff is implementing a new clear-bag policy falling in line with advice from Homeland Security.

4. Claim 200million(economic activity) > 24million(economic impact) - this is ridiculous for a couple reasons.

a. Again Incorrect ...your comparing two different metrics.

Economic activity doesn't equal economic impact.

Economic impact
A macroeconomic effect on commerce, employment, or incomes produced by a decision, event, or policy.

- What is economic impact? definition and meaning

Economic activity
Actions that involve the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services at all levels within a society. Gross domestic product or GDP is one way of assessing economic activity, and the degree of current economic activity and forecasts for its future level can significantly impact business activity and profits, as well as inflation and interest rates.

- What comes after those ellipses?

Economic impact is the difference between two different points of economic activity(events).
EXAMPLE: Economic_activity_1 - economic_activity_2 = Economic_impact

Economic impact analysis
An economic impact analysis (EIA) examines the effect of an event on the economy in a specified area, ranging from a single neighborhood to the entire globe. It usually measures changes in business revenue, business profits, personal wages, and/or jobs. The economic event analyzed can include implementation of a new policy or project, or may simply be the presence of a business or organization. An economic impact analysis is commonly conducted when there is public concern about the potential impacts of a proposed project or policy.

An economic impact analysis typically measures or estimates the change in economic activity between two scenarios, one assuming the economic event occurs, and one assuming it does not occur (which is referred to as the counterfactual case). This can be accomplished either before or after the event (ex ante or ex post).

- Economic impact analysis - Wikipedia

As a matter a fact, for all anyone knows we could be talking about a negative economic impact ...even with 200million economic activity.

EXAMPLE: 200million(Bayou_classic_economic_activity) - 250million(average_economic_activity) = -50million(Economic_impact)

This is before even clarifying if we are talking about (activity & impact) in regards to revenue or profits ...a question which I'll leave alone for lack of data either way. The question then becomes...

What is the economic impact of the bayou classic on new orleans?

The Economic Impact of The Classic is Significant
When asked to discuss the economic impact of the Classic, Young added, “The famed Classic embodies a family friendly atmosphere and fosters an economic impact of $50 million to the greater city of New Orleans.” (The $50 million economic impact is substantiated by the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau based on hotel rooms.)

- Bayou Classic: Holiday Tradition Combining Business with Pleasure

The economic impact for our community is an estimated $50 million annually. That is an important infusion of revenue and is a strong kick off to the holiday season, which doesn't wrap up until the Sugar Bowl in January.

- Bayou Classic traditions enrich New Orleans: Editorial

But it seems unlikely that the Bayou Classic will change. Nor should it. The game is a Louisiana tradition that brings an estimated $50 million economic impact to New Orleans. As for the idea of another match-up, the Bayou Classic name is jointly owned by Southern and Grambling. Consequently, if it's not Southern and Grambling, it won't be the Bayou Classic.

- The Bayou Classic requires Southern and Grambling: Editorial

The game and related events had a $50 million economic impact on the city in 2015, said Kristian Sonnier, vice president of communications and public relations for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau.
With projections for this weekend slightly higher than last year’s, “we expect the economic impact to be on par,” Sonnier said.

- With a lot on the line, 43rd annual Bayou Classic could set attendance record

And to be clear that's a combination of the economic impact of both tourist bringing money into the city and local people spending money thats already floating around the local economy. I.E. if noone from out of town ever came to N.O there is still economic activity. the question then becomes...

How much outside capital was added to the New Orleans economy by the bayou classic?

The Bayou Classic is also more than just a football game and commemorates historically-black colleges and universities. There are usually community events held during the weekend such as concerts, playground builds, job fairs and college fairs. The popular Battle of the Bands and Greek Show showcases bands, fraternities and sororities from both universities in a fierce competition of song, dance and school pride. A Fan Festival held the day before the big game includes live entertainment, vendors, games and special giveaways. An estimated 200,000 fans pour into the city every year for Bayou Classic, pumping more than $30 million into the local economy.

- http://www.neworleansonline.com/pr/releases/releases/Bayou Classic.pdf

...again that's by the folks paid with N.O. tax dollars to promote city tourism.

b. We are just talking about magic city classic economic impact in Birmingham city, the metro areas consist of lodging, shopping, and resturants that are in a different local jurisdiction / tax zone even though they are part of the Birmingham metro.

Attendees eat in restaurants in metropolitan and greater Birmingham, seek fashion alternatives at local shopping malls Brookwood Village, The Riverchase Galleria, The Shops of the Summit, and The Shops of Grandriver among others, lodge in the myriad hotels around the city, and buy staples such as gasoline, foodstuffs, and pay admission to the game and some related activities, which provides the bulk of the aforementioned figure.

- MCR: The “Classic” Impact

The above are in different tax collection zones even though they benefit from an economic impact by the magic city classic.

c. The above being dealt with it has to be noted that the whole angle of comparing economic activity & impact is flawed anyway. The embedded assumption is that more money spent = more people when in reality more money spent can simply mean New Orleans is a (more)expensive fukk'n town.

New Orleans: Beer $8.34 x 100k people = $834,000
Birmingham: Beer $7.57 x 100k people = $757,000

New Orleans: hotel $150 x 100k people = $15million
Birmingham: hotel $100 x 100k people = $10million

New Orleans: dinner $50 x 100k people = $5million
Birmingham: dinner $30 x 100k people = $3million

New Orleans: (Beer, hotel, & dinner x 100k people) = $20,834,000 total
Birmingham: (Beer, hotel, & dinner x 100k people) = $13,757,000 total

By your nonsense logic the above difference is because more people turned out. No! While not as bad as San Francisco or New York, New Orleans is simply a more expensive city than Birmingham.

Livability Score Comparison
Cost of living - New Orleans: C | Birmingham: A-

- City Comparison Results

and if New Orleans wasn't so expensive then...

4. If New Orleans wasn't so expensive then maybe they could get more people to buy tickets :yeshrug:

See this is why it's good that we have our own jurisdictions where we manage governance. Imagine if this was an event in a cac run town and the police didn't feel like working the event. They would have free reign to do all kinda back handed stuff like scheduling maintenance, raising permit fees, hassling vendors, etc when they know we have an event coming ...but they have no vested interest in it. This is why local elections are important. Right now his gripes about the classic are diminished because he doesn't have a local governance infrastructure that backs his views.
