What Yall think about an idea that randomly came to mind of Miles college moving down to the old carraway hospital site?
The property is currently just sitting up there in shambles with multiple people trying to do something with it but it's only zoned for medical and education.

I saw that currently the umptenth company trying to do something there is Corporate Realty B'ham AL.

Carraway redevelopment could bring new life to northern Birmingham
By Ameera Steward

.....
...
Corporate Realty — a local commercial real estate firm that handles everything from site development and construction to marketing and management — is looking to transform the vacant 50-acre site into a mixed-use development that could include residential, retail, restaurants, and office space, as well as a hotel and entertainment venues.

Brian Wolfe, Corporate Realty chief development officer, said the company is looking to capture the momentum for development around downtown. Last year, a new Top Golf sports complex opened near the Uptown entertainment district. Currently, more than $300 million is going toward expansion of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) and a new downtown stadium.

My initial apprehensions where "would Miles college even move their campus to Birmingham?" :patrice:
I then found a NY times archive article dating back to 1975 where Miles tried to buy the Birmingham southern campus near downtown but couldn't raise the money in time.

Miles College Abandons Plans To Move to a Bigger Campus
By B. DRUMMOND AYRES JR.MAY 21, 1975

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., May 20 —Despite a last‐minute fund raising effort by Birmingham's white business community, Miles College, a predominantly black school on the city's southwestern edge, has been forced by a cash shortage to abandon plans to move to new expanded campus.

Miles officials had hoped to purchase the campus of Birmingham Southern College, a predominantly white downtown institution that had planned to move to the suburbs. The sale price had been set at $14‐Million, and after three years Of negotiations the Miles authorities were confident they could close the deal before summer.

But after noting a steady lag in the Miles fund drive, Birmingham Southern has decided to call off negotiations, unwilling to keep its students, faculty and alumni in doubt any longer. Even with the help of the Birmingham businessmen, whose stores were once picketed by civil rights demonstrators from Miles, the black school has been unable to come up with more than $8‐million.

Miles College Abandons Plans To Move to a Bigger Campus

I figure if corp realty is really looking to get in the game there then between...
  • Corporate realty - Gets the retail space around the new campus and the old Miles college site.
  • Miles college - Ownership of the core new campus.
  • City of B'ham - New tax base.
...they could easily deal with the funding, property management, zoning, etc issues.

Corporate realty - will already know that the property will be occupied, exactly what the demographics(wants & needs) of occupants will be, and can focus on retail given school will handle housing.
Miles college - will be better able to sell itself to prospective students given increased local visibility, student access to local entertainment venues, and retail space surrounding the campus.
Local Residents - will have an entity that brings in retail & services that aren't really available. They already know how Miles will effect the neighborhood by visiting the existing campus.
City of Birmingham - gets a young distinct cultural entity(HBCU) district for the city, local patrons for BJCC development, etc, etc, etc

:ehh:
I think it could be a win all around if done properly
(Hell if they could squeeze both Miles and Lawson up there and make it a formal HBCU district...)
