As Lightfoot Blames Court Shutdown for Violence, Aldermen Push Back

Hours after Mayor Lori Lightfoot blamed the shutdown of the Cook County court system by the COVID-19 pandemic for escalating violence across Chicago’s South and West sides, several aldermen told “Chicago Tonight” that rising inequality and distrust of the police is to blame.

Police are still investigating two mass shootings Sunday night, one in South Shore that left one dead and five injured, and another in Marquette Park that left one dead and 10 injured.

Lightfoot said Monday morning at an unrelated news conference that the two mass shootings were caused by “gang conflicts” and were retaliation for previous shootings.

After calling the violence “heartbreaking and frustrating,” Lighfoot called on Cook County court officials to restart regular criminal trials, which have been suspended since March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Open up the courts,” Lightfoot said. “People need to get their day in court. Justice delayed is justice denied. And you’re hurting not only those who are charged, but also those in the community. The victims, the survivors and the witnesses who need to have a measure of justice.”

However, Ald. Jeanette Taylor (20th Ward) said crime is driven by the income inequality that divides Chicago, not the closure of the courts, saying that Chicago is a city of extreme wealth and grinding poverty.

Social media has done a good job of sensationalizing everything to where you can nitpick anything to where you can paint any type of picture . It's worse now because you have cell phone video and so that goes along with the confirmation bias... In the 70's 80's it was NYC, in the late 80's/90's it was LA. In the late 90's 00's it was New Orleans and Atlanta. Now it's Chicago [and occasionally Baltimore].

What I’ve discovered is a lot of Black folks didn’t hate Trump’s policies. They just hated his personality and rhetoric .

I talk to Black folks all the time that are anti trans, anti illegal immigration, anti tax and regulation, anti gun control, and pro law order. But the first thing out of their mouth is “ fukk Republicans, gotta get them outta here!”

I can't speak to other places but I can in Chicago. Something needs to be done because what has been going on now ain't working. Chicago is such a beautiful city but these knuckleheads have it to where you might be scared to go anywhere in the city. You should keep your head on a swivel in any unfamiliar land but only in Chicago does it feel like there are a lot of Chief Keef looking nikkas with burners on the waist. I used to love going to the Taste of Chicago, I'm not taking my family there now as it ain't how it used to be. Not to say that killers have discretion about who they murk but so many people in Chicago will shoot first without hesitation. It's different here. Anything I do go into the city, I fill up my gas tank because I'm only there for what I need to be there for. I used to work in North Lawndale at UCAN doing finance. My family pleaded with me to stop working there because truthfully, the shyt that is happening now, it's bigger than us. After the 5th person got shot within two blocks of my job at the time, that's when the full court press was on from my family. Ever talk to a mother that is scared to let her son go across the damn street to hoop because the gangs are initiating people there? Son is 15 years old and is left to dribble his basketball in front of his house like he's five. That's no way to live.



Explain to us how a stat like that is even real. JANUARY still had a week to go before it finished and it is fukking cold.

We even had a breh from Chicago detail how he got shot and defended himself.

We are just tired of the bullshyt. This action might not look like what we want it to look it but everything else that has happened hasn't worked so fukk it, get the bad characters off the streets and let people feel safe in their homes and neighborhoods.

Detroit had over 300 murders in 2020
Chicago had over 700 in 2020
But Chicago had almost 3 Million People and like 10 million in the metro while
Detroit has around 600K residents.
That's why a place like Detroit is considered way more violent because there is almost no escape in most areas.
And there are probably 50 other US cities More violent than Chicago.
If chi town had 600K people it would probably only have about 70 murders.... that's how safe it is....
But because the Media loves the Trauma porn of the Southside so called chi raq areas and Hollywood movies have been made, white record executives have made millions off the corny gang songs, etc.... many folk have been scared and made the think Chi town isnt this Safe, beautiful, financial hub.....
