Axes are great for splitting wood, strongly disagree with PoZ.

Survival hatchets are pretty cool too.

Axes are great for splitting wood. But it is dangerous! I didn't say they weren't great for splitting wood.

They aren't great for taking down standing deadwood for a campfire. I would much rather use a saw.

You need a really good Axe, definitely not something you would buy from Big 5 or some other store at the mall.

Oh yeah for sure I wouldnt handle anything of a decent size with an axe. Definitely on the money regarding the cheap stuff. Dont need an axe head flying off the handle at you or something like that.

obviously it would be better to have an actual saw, not to mention a bunch of other tools. but I thought this was about one all-around tool for survival

If you're good with an Axe, that is basically all you would need I guess in the Northern forests.

But for the tropical forests there is no all-around better tool than the machete.

Also a partially serrated blade that is made by gerber is going to be made of Stainless steal, that's tougher to sharpen and hold an edge.

I wasn't trying to argue for one particular brand. for that matter, Mora also makes knives with stainless blades

overall, I'd rather have a knife than an axe. I can't imagine cleaning a fish with an axe. for the record, i do have some experience with this

My boy has this, he got it as a gift its very nice. Paired with a medium sized knife would probably be very versatile.
