Top Private Schools for Black Kids - Part 2

Alright @ab.aspectus get your ass in here and drop some gems (and explain that damn tuition)

University of Chicago Lab School
Chicago, IL
Student:Teacher ratio: 9.6:1
% of Students that attend 4-Year Colleges: 100%
Tuition: :damn:
Nursery, full day–Grade 5
$36,384

Grades 6–8
$38,850

Grades 9–12
$40,488

Note 70% of students get some financial aid though

Acceptance Rate: 79%
Total Students: 1,919
Black Students: 169 (9% of total)

The University of Chicago Lab School is mentioned here not because it has a huge Black contingent, not even 10% are Black, however it has been the most prestigious school for Chicago's Black upper middle class and elite for some time. It also has one of the highest numbers of famous Black graduates of any Black high school (much like the old school Dunbar in DC). Think John W. Rogers of Ariel Capital, Valerie Jarrett, W. Kamau Bell, Linda Johnson Rice (daughter of Ebony/Jet founder), Margo Jefferson (Pulitzer prize winner), Leslie Hairston, etc. You get the point. If you want to rub elbows with the Black titan kids, this is the spot.

Neither of you are wrong :manny: . Depending on where you live private school may be the better option. That said, it's important to be mindful of their socialization. @CrimsonTider is right to call it out. A lot of the heavy lifting may have to be done outside of school.

Private school and real positive actions at home and making sure you keep them in check. Keep the black in them and make sure they are confident and proud black kids.

It doesn’t work like this

Getting them interaction with Black kids not in private school helps too. Otherwise (in my experience) they may feel proud to be Black but can't relate/socialize with a large percentage of Black folks.

This too. I guess spending time with the wider family is key outside of school. I went to a school where vast majority were white but at home etc, it was time spent with all my cousins, aunts ,uncles etc definitely helps.

And in school is where primarily all your social interactions will come from

@DrBanneker My bad if I overlooked it but I didn’t see mention of St. Augustine in New Orleans. Not sure if it didn’t meet your criteria (it’s an all boys school). I visited a couple years ago and was impressed, man. Virtually all black boys. 100% college acceptance rate etc. :wow:.

I checked and it actually isn't in the database. I notice a lot of private schools (including Black boarding schools) that have majority Black student bodies aren't there. Not 100% why they are missed in the coverage.

I can speak on a handful of the Ohio schools listed here, and I think it really requires some contextualization for the purpose of private school.

Private schools exist, currently as a repudiation of public education systems being integrated - the growth in private schools post Brown v. Board of Education was largely to ensure white parents could continue to send their kids to all-white schools. While that isn't the explicit goal of these schools at present - the legacy remains and the financial barrier to access is key.

Outside of a small number of these schools, they will be majority white and still have quite a bit of anti-Blackness embedded in the rules and the handling of incoming Black students.

That being said - a lot of urban prep schools, particularly the Catholic ones - have had Black students and alumni for decades - I know Benedictine in Cleveland does, as does its sister Beaumont School; a Black parent alumni base is the best chance you have at gauging if the school is "right" for your Black child.

Wealthier schools like Western Reserve Academy and Gilmour Academy have some powerful Black alums that provide quite a bit of support to incoming Black students.

If you can afford it private school is the better option. At least up until highschool.
If you can afford private school, it's a vastly better idea to enroll your child in robust pre-school programs, summer and spring programs once they've started school, and developmentally relevant extra-curricular activities.

That way they benefit from inclusion and socialization of public schools, they also benefit from any programs targeted at public schools, and they stay advanced enough to outperform their private school peers in college acceptance.
