Yeah let me check that. Maybe the query pulled wrong since they don't have a racial breakdown for the stats on the web page. UsNews reports similar #s though that doesn't make it right

This is probably the #1 elite Catholic boarding school in the country. I doubt they have a high black population. My cousin's attended another boarding school in Newport, St. George School, one of the St. Grottlesex Schools which are the Episcopal affiliated prep schools. It was probably less than 20 black kids there.

These are only private schools. Walter Peyton, Whitney Young etc. are public. Charter schools also won't be on this list.

Damn, for some reason I thought the magnet schools were private. I think it's because you have to apply and interview to get into those schools. Very different from the suburban public school system.

Fenwick has only 64 Black students now out of over 1,000 per current stats. Does this link look right?

Yeah, I guess this is right.

Above the fray.
Good thread.

Never thought about the % of Black students.
Unless you're in a metro area with a sizable Black affluent community, by default the % of Black students in private schools will be small. That's just the reality. A work around to that would be if the metro area has an established Latino community, and then the area's old parochial high school might still be open. And Black parents would send their children there as an alternative to public.

Checked a school near me from this list and the numbers here seem suspect.

School Name-----City-----State-----County-----Total Enrollment-----Black Enrollment-----Black Percent-----4-Yr College Rate
PORTSMOUTH ABBEY SCHOOL-----PORTSMOUTH-----RI-----NEWPORT-----332-----74-----22-----99

Class of 2022

That said. I'm tired of the time and money spent on tutoring and thinking of taking the plunge into private school, so I truly appreciate this thread.

wife and I were just having this conversation :salute:

Thanks for catching that. I had to go into the database documentation to find out that in some cases the Dept. of Education is statistically estimating the racial count on some schools that didn't submit data based on geography and "similar schools". Actually surprised they would do this but I removed the spurious schools (about 20 but Abbey Portsmouth was one). It should be much cleaner now. Thanks!

One last thing, I am listing the top boarding schools though I dropped the Black % threshold to 5% since attendance is even more sparse.

First are the four remaining Black boarding schools in the country you can check out

The Piney Woods School
Redemption Christian Academy
Pine Forge Academy
Laurinburg Institute

Boarding school reporting is spotty and some I know of aren't even listed...for example a popular boarding school for Atlanta Blacks in the 90s was Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA which is about 7% Black. But below is what they have.

Now the rest by Black enrollment

Top Private Schools for Black Kids - Part 1

I decided to do some mini-profiles on prominent private schools for Black kids. I am not sure these are "thread" worthy so I will just drop them in posts of this thread for folks unless they want something bigger.

maybe the PG crew @Gloxina @Coco Loco @Problematic Pat @www.THUG.com @BigMan can comment

Bishop McNamara High School
Forrestville, MD (PG County)
Student:Teacher ratio: 9.8:1
Tuition: $18,700
Acceptance Rate: 40%

Bishop McNamara has the largest Black attendance of any secondary school in the country with 658 Black students (77% of total) out of 858. Over 98% of students go on to four year colleges. It is a Catholic High School offering grades 9-12 located in PG County, often (with competition from Charles County, MD) called the wealthiest Black county in the country.

If you can afford it private school is the better option. At least up until highschool.
No it’s not

that shyt is awful socially for a black kid
Neither of you are wrong :manny: . Depending on where you live private school may be the better option. That said, it's important to be mindful of their socialization. @CrimsonTider is right to call it out. A lot of the heavy lifting may have to be done outside of school.
