looking at the release date on wiki is kind of wild. I always remember Slick Rick as coming out first. But NWA came out before that album. For some reason Rick's album seems older. And EPMD came out a few months before both.

BDP and RA came out months before those and they sound much much harder style than Rick and EPMD. It's kind of crazy. It really shows how fast things were advancing and how many differnet types of music you could choose from.

Not everyone was copying because they didn't know what others were doing. There was no internet, etc.. They were all seperately locked up in their own studios making their music. It's really bugged to see when you look at the dates. Plus Rick's album had material he'd been doing since 85. The Ultra album had singles out since 86.

Plus Marley and Dre were involved in multiple classics that year. Same with Bomb Squad and Ced Gee.

It's hard to choose because you have ATLEAST 5 releases from 88 that are apart of the greatest Hip Hop albums of all time list. I'll probably say Critical Beatdown is the most underatted out of all of them.

nice post!

Public Enemy "It Takes A Nation Of Millions" followed by Slick Rick, and Ultramagnetic

side note: the new PE album "Most of My Heroes Still Don't Appear On No Stamps" is actually their best album in years!

Like I said on :hamster:

It Takes a Nation of Millions is the best album

but Ultramagnetics MC's Critical Beatdown is the most underrated and my personal favorite, but 88 is arguably the GOAT year.

Yea, if you think about it, it's just too much heat to choose from. And we not even talking about the singles/joints that dropped that year too.

As far as who had the most bangers that year (joints that were getting the parties live), it's a toss up between PE and Biz.
