Someone should make a ‘Challengers’ style poster with the Inside Out emotions facing head to head against the Minions if they haven’t already, because those two franchises are gonna have the box office in a chokehold for a while.

It's Anything But A Quiet Place Inside / Out at the Movies: Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 28-30)​

Even a great opening weekend from A Quiet Place: Day One could not stop Inside Out 2 in its 3rd weekend, as it took 1st place again with $57.4M. That's the 8th best 3rd weekend ever -- ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home's $56M -- and just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $59.9M. And like Mario, Inside Out 2 is now a member of the $1B club. With $1B, it's the 5th highest grossing animated film ever.

It's the first time since 2018-19 that we've had animated movies gross $1B in back to back years. Back then it was actually 3 flicks. 2018 saw Incredibles 2 make $1.2B. 2019 had Frozen ll ($1.2B) and Toy Story 4 ($1B). Its $469.3M after 3 weeks is ahead of Mario's $436M and has it comfortably on pace to become the top animated movie of all time at the domestic box office, when it knocks off Incredible 2's $608.5M.

A Quiet Place: Day One, which is the 3rd entry in the series, did its best to push for the top spot, but it came up just short with a great result nonetheless, with $53M. That's the best in the franchise, toppling A Quiet Place's $50.2M. We'll just ignore that $50.2M is the equivalent to $62.9M in 2024.

A win's a win. And with audiences grading it the same B+ as A Quiet Place, which did a 3.75 multiplier off its opening weekend, we could be looking at a possible $200M for Day One.

I've seen PIG. Surely the good folks at Paramount wouldn't let Sarnoski get away with that again.

If he can't be in Yellowstone, then Kevin Costner is gonna put up $50M of his own cash, make his own Yellowstone, chop it into 4 3-hour "movies," and throw it in theaters. Thus was born Horizon: An American Saga. Chapter 1 opened with $11M. I saw Costner on a baseball game on TBS last week doing promo. He was in the booth with Bob Costas talking about Field of Dreams and providing a little color commentary. Old people (for the most part) watch baseball, and maybe those were the only people who went to see this 3-hour epic. Will they show up in August for Chapter 2? Will Warner Bros. stream Chapters 3 and 4 on Max? Could be good competition for Yellowstone. Make it a miniseries and rename it Horizon: An American Sloga.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die continues to perform well with a $10.3M 4th weekend. With $165.2M so far, it'll pass Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($168M) this week to have the 5th biggest domestic box office of the year.

Fifth place belongs to Kalki 2898 AD with $5.4M. What is this shyt, you may ask? It's a 2 hour & 50 minute Tollywood movie where "a modern avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, is said to have descended on Earth to protect the world from evil forces."

The Summer of Animation Domination Contingrus: Weekend Box Office Results (Jul. 5-7)​

God bless America and God bless Gru and the Minions. It's July so that means a new Despicable Me movie is in theaters making millions of dollars. What's more American than that? After a $75M 3-day weekend, Despicable Me 4 has totalled $122.6M since it debuted on Wednesday.

That $75M opening is the 4th best in the Despicable Me / Minions franchise, besting Despicable Me 3's $72.4M. The $122.6M 5-day total is 23.8% ahead of Despicable Me 3's $99M and 14.7% behind Minions: The Rise of Gru's $140.6M.

Summer is in full swing. We got another heat wave starting today and another one next week. It's probably going to make for more families cooling off in the air conditioned theaters and watching Gru and the gang. With an A CinemaScore -- the same as every entry in the franchise, save Despicable Me three's A- -- we're probably looking at this being carried to $250M+ by the time it's all done.

Inside Out 2 may have been dethroned for the first time in its 4 weeks but it still put up a great number with a $30M weekend. That's the 12th biggest fourth weekend ever. However, it is behind The Super Mario Bros Movie's $40.8M, which is the 6th best ever. Here's where we can directly thank Despicable Me 4 for for the slight drop off. But not to fret because with $533.8M, Inside Out 2 is the 3rd highest grossing animated film ever behind the aforementioned Mario with $574.9M and Incredibles 2's $608.5M.

A Quiet Place: Day One took 3rd place with $21M. That's 9% more than A Quiet Place: Part II's $19.2M. Its domestic total is now $94.3M -- 6.8% ahead of Part II's $88.3M total after 2 weeks.

In fourth place we have MaXXXine, closing out the X trilogy, with a $6.7M opening. That's the best in the franchise and more than 2x Pearl's $3.1M. In addition to gap in release time, we can probably thank the 80's setting compared to Pearl's WWI's. Audiences gave it a B CinemaScore which is a half a grade better than Pearl's B-, which should help it to easily outgross. X's $11.7M final total.

Holding down the fifth spot was Bad Boys: Ride or Die with $6.5M. With $177.3M, the Bad Boys have ridden past Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes to become the 5th highest grossing movie of the year.

Despite playing in only 231 theaters, The Fall Guy jumped by 115% and made $820K. It damn near took 10th place away from Kinds of Kindness, which had a disappointing showing, only making $860K, despite adding 430 locations. Its total is $92.1M -- 12th best this year.

With Despicable Me 4 debuting, The Garfield Movie lost 956 locations, which makes sense; it fell from the seventh place down to 14th with $510K. Its running total is $91M -- 13th best this year.

My screening was packed for it last Thursday and I was in Theater #8, lol. It was surreal to see, but welcoming also. Hope this encourages other studios to get more creative with their marketing campaigns. Longlegs’ is an all-timer for sure in that regard.

The Despicable Me franchise continues to rule the summer. With Despicable Me 4's $44.6M, the franchise --which comprises 6 films, including the Minions-- has gone past $5B in global box office grosses. It's the first animated franchise to accomplish the feat. Not even Toy Story, with its $3.2B, can say the same.

The latest entry is stacking up very similarly to the last entry in the franchise, Minions: The Rise of Gru. DM4 is just 3% behind Rise of Gru's $46.1M second weekend. After two weeks, the running totals are nearly identical: Rise of Gru at $210.6M to Despicable Me 4's $211.1M. That $211.1M makes Despicable Me 4 the third highest grossing movie this year, passing Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's $196.3M. Its $437.8M global total has it 5th amongst Hollywood releases.

The surprise of the weekend was the highly anticipated Longlegs. And it didn't disappoint with a record $22.6M opening for Neon. That blows away Neon's previous best $5.3M opening courtesy of Sydney Sweeney's Immaculate. It's the best original horror opening of the year, besting Night Swim's $11.7M. It's already the sixth highest grossing horror movie of the year and poised to become the second best, trailing only A Quiet Place: Day One's $116.2M. Second place belongs to The Strangers: Chapter 1 and its $35.2M.

It's a tremendous win for Nic Cage. It's his first live action film to open at $20M since 2012's Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ($22.1M).

That's this year. There are horror films from a couple of years ago that are potentially more interesting compared. Particularly Smile, which was also rated R and also opened with $22.6M  in 2022. That movie was slightly more well received by audiences, who scored a B- en route to a $105.9M finish. Longlegs received a C+ score, the same as 2022's Barbarian, which opened with $10.5M and finished with $40.8M. So I would say that Longlegs, if it performs similarly, is looking at anywhere from $87.4M to $96.7M when its run is done.

Inside Out 2 fell to third place with $20.7M. With $572.4M, it's $2.5M away from passing The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $574.9M total. That running total is more than double the $282.1M that Dune 2 (the #2 movie of the year) made this year.

Taking fourth place with $11.8M was A Quiet Place Day One. That was juuuuussst behind AQP: Part 2's $12M 3rd weekend. Its $116.2M running total --8th highest grossing movie of the year-- is ahead of AQP: Part 2's $109.3M at the same point in time, not adjusted for inflation.

Apple's rom-com, Fly Me to the Moon opened with $10M to close out the top five. Probably not the opening Apple was looking for when they dolled out a $100M to make this movie and secure Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum. It also continues the downward opening trend of Apple films at the box office: Killers of the Flower Moon ($23.2M), Napoleon ($20.6M) and Argylle ($17.4M).

Speaking of Channing, his rom-com, Lost City, opened with $30.4M two years ago. The difference there? Sandra Bullock instead of ScarJo.

MaXXXine tumbled all the way down to 8th place with $2M -- making even less than Kevin Costner's bomb, Horizon. It fell by 69.1%, poor even for horror movie holds.

Did you know it was the 30th anniversary of The Lion King? Disney re-released it in 1,330 theaters, where it made $1M. Didn't even know it was being re-released. Didn't see one TV spot. Still finished top 10.

The Bikeriders finished in 14th place with $410K, which got it to $20.3M.
