Bad Boys will have a better opening weekend than Furiousa. I don't like the trailers and wasn't a fan of part 3 but it should be able to earn more. If not, it's a flop city summer. The animated flicks will be the only earners with maybe one surprise hit.

Oh, What a Day. What a Not-So Lovely Memorial Day: Weekend Box Office Results (May 24-27)
May 1st kicked off the Summer at the box office. It's now Labor Day which is the unofficial start of Summer season. So when are the movies going to actually reflect that it's the fukking Summer?
After much consternation, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
opened at number 1 over the holiday with $32M. That is the worst Memorial Day opening for a number one since Casper in 1995 when the friendly ghost floated its way to $22M. That was apparently a disappointment 29 years ago BUT it translates to $45M in today's dollars. That's 40% ahead of this new Mad Max-less flick. 
Coincidentally, Mad Max: Fury Road, opened with $45.4M in May 2015. Both movies scored the same B+ with audiences nearly a decade apart. Maybe Furiosa will have similarly long legs. Then again, Charlize Theron is the one with the long legs. Anya Taylor-Joy has a long neck. Jokes aside, if Furiosa performs to the same 3.38 post opening weekend multiplier, it'll end its run with $108M. Not what WB is looking for with a $168M budgeted franchise entry. That's a rare recent misfire for Warner Bros. at the Box Office. Maybe Zaslav is to blame for this too.
Chris Pratt is back - this time as the orange tabby cat - in The Garfield Movie. It was right behind Furiosa with a $31.1M opening. How bout that. Last year we had Pratt and Taylor-Joy star in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which opened with $166.4M over Easter. This year, the two could only account for 38% of that total with a combined $63.1M.
At least Garfield was only made on a $60M budget. It bowed to $97.4M globally. And it got the same B+ score as Furiosa. 
IF held strong with $21M. It's 3-day of $16.1M was "only" down by 52%. Reynolds' last theatrical entry, 2021's Free Guy, made $60.3M after 11 days, without the benefit of a Monday holiday. Still though, IF's $63.5M is right in line.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes had a $17.2M holiday, which was good enough for 4th place in its 3rd weekend. Its $126.6M running total makes it the fourth highest grossing movie of the year ahead of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire's $112.6M. It's also just shy of $300 million worldwide with $298.6M so far.
The Fall Guy fell to fifth place only down one spot with $7.6M. That's despite being available on demand. It's finding its legs and has nearly identical domestic and foreign revenue splits: $73.9M domestic running total to $71.6M foreign running total. I still got to watch it.

Sight, tryna be the new Sound of Freedom, opened with $3.5M.
Babes opened with $1.2M from 590 theaters. Don't remember if I put this in the Summer Box Office Preview.

Real Summer Blockbusters Move in Silence like Garfield's Lasagna: Weekend Box Office Results (May 31-Jun. 2)
It feels like just yesterday when I saw Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at the movies. Only it wasn't yesterday. It was this time last year - the 22nd week at the box office. Across the Spider-Verse did an astounding $120.6 million opening which crushed The Little Mermaid's $41M. This year?
The Garfield Movie.
In its second weekend.
Making $14 million.
That's what gets you first place nowadays.
And that's with The Garfield Movie having to battle back from defeat last week at the hands of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. That makes $51.5M for the Pratt cat flick. So it took the top spot this week and it overtook Furiosa's total gross thus far. Thanks to a $100.7M foreign haul, Garfield is sitting pretty at $152.2 million.
Win's and win no matter how you slice it. The head that's being sliced in this case is the lasagna. That's what Garfield eats and he and Chris Pratt are eating right now.
Garfield wasn't the only movie who clawed its way back. IF took second place with $10.8M. That's right IF - not Furiosa.
After 3 weekends, it's cracked $80.4M - just ahead of Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy's $78.9M in the same time period. Of course, 2021's $78.9M equals $90.4M in 2024. And IF's $80.4M would have translated to $70M in 2021. But that's inflation, baby. IF is a little behind but it's holding steady on its way to $100M. 
Finally, we get to Furiosa - falling down to 3rd place - with $10.7M.
It hasn't even cracked $50 million yet with $49.6M after 2 weeks. Where The Garfield Movie found success overseas, it's not really been the case for Furiosa with only $64.7 million, bringing its worldwide running total to $114.3M. Mad Max: Fury Road, in its second weekend, which also happened to be Memorial Day Weekend, did $24.6M 3-day and $31.2M over the 4 days, for comparison. Which is to say it's no comparison.

4th place is held down once again by Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with $8.8M. Planet of the Eights?
It's approaching the standard $400M break-even territory - based on its $160M budget - with $337M worldwide. It's $139.9M running domestic total is on the verge of overtaking the $146.8 million made by War for the Planet of the Apes. That sounds great but that $146.8M from 2017 translates to $188M today when adjusted for inflation. 
The Fall Guy did not fall from fifth place with $4.2M. It's made $16.5M since it hit on-demand 2 weeks ago and is up to $80.2M, which makes it the 9th highest grossing movie of the year. Not bad after an inauspicious start.
Notables
With $28.3 million in the bank, The Strangers: Chapter 1 passes Imaginary's $28 million, as it becomes the second highest grossing horror movie of the year. It only trails Night Swim's $32.4M.
Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle opened with $3.5M from 1,119 theaters. That may sound light but it's already made $76.6M internationally.
On the heels of Late Night with the Devil, In a Violent Nature had IFC Films second biggest opening with $2.1M.

I wonder if offering these movies at home for the same price would have any effect. Is it the movie, the theatre or just movie going itself that's to blame. Would be nice to have some tracking on overall streaming week to week.

Now That's How You Sposed to Open a Summer Blockbuster! Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 7-9)
Thank the Lord, or more accurately, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The Bad Boys are here to save the summer box office with a $56M / $104.6M opening for Ride or Die.
It was funny reading Deadline over the past week, as they said Ride or Die was tracking at $50M, then down to $40M, and possibly down to the $30M's. Then to jump to $52M and $54M. Only for the actual number to be $56M. Just keep throwing numbers out there and eventually you'll get it right.
That is the second best opening in the Bad Boys quadrilogy, 10% behind Bad Boys For Life's $62.5M. It's also the second best opening this Summer behind the $58.4M of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. It's also more than Furiosa's $55.6M 15 day total.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die being number 1 adds to the legacies of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. For Will, it's the 18th #1 opening of his career. It's his first since the aforementioned Bad Boys For Life in 2020. For Martin Lawrence, it's his eighth #1 opening. Like will. It's also his first since bad boys for life. The only movie he had between Bad Boys releases was Mindcage In 2022, which was not released theatrically. Black royalty.
Bad Boys for Life was number one for three straight weekends. With an Inside Out 2 dropping next week, that won't be the case this time around. Still, Ride or Die is rocking an A- CinemaScore, so it should have good legs to counter the family friendly animated flick.
It's a Sony tsunami at the top of the box office. Bad Boys at #1 and The Garfield Movie at #2 with $10M in its third weekend. With $68.6M so far, it's the 12th highest grossing movie of the year, moving past Civil War and its $68.5M. It just needs to pass Migration's $73.2M to get into the top 10.
IF held down the 3rd spot again with $8M. That makes for a $93.5M running total. That's 1.6% ahead of Free Guy's $92M pace after 24 days. It'll pass Bob Marley: One Love's $96.8M any day now.
4th place is occupied by a newcomer, The Watchers. With a $7M opening, it appears that nobody watched.
This was not directed by M. Knight Shyamalan but his daughter, Ishana, in her theatrical directorial debut. She's directed a bunch of Servant episodes for Apple TV+. It's a 50% lower opening than M. Knight's Knock at the Cabin, which did $14.1M in 2022. And Papa Shyamalan's pic had a C cinemascore compared to the C- his daughter managed. So it's prospects aren't looking promising. 
Fifth place belongs to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with $5.4M. Its $149.7M running total surpasses War for the Planet of the Apes' $146.8M. It remains the highest grossing movie of the summer until Bad Boys / Inside Out / Deadpool dethrone it.
Notables
The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, which Peter Jackson remastered in 2020 are in theaters. The Fellowship of the Ring made $2.4M on Saturday. The Two Towers made $1.9M on Sunday. The Return of the King returns to theaters tomorrow.

Upside Down. Riley, You Turn the Box Office Inside Out: Father's Day Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 14-16)
Pixar is officially back. Well, maybe not officially, since it's only one movie, but they do have a certified hit with Inside Out 2 raking in $155M.
That's the second best opening in Pixar history behind Incredibles 2's $182.6M. It's also 71% more than Inside Out's $90.4M opening in 2015. It also beat last year's The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $146.3M. 
But I buried the lede. Pixar is here to save the summer box office. That $155M opening is far and away the best of the year, let alone the summer, clearing Dune 2's $82.5M by 88%.
Inside Out's 2's miraculous performance was not a guarantee considering Pixar's recent history. Last year's Elemental only opened to $29.6M. For that it was 2022's Lightyear flopping with a $50.5M opening. All three films have the standard $200M Pixar production budget. So it is a return to form for Disney-Pixar.
And if Inside Out 2 performs like the original after opening weekend, we could be looking at some history. Of the now five Pixar films that have had $100 plus million openings. The previous four have all made at least $415M domestically and $1B globally. If this new entry has the same legs as the original Inside Out, which seems likely given the identical A cinemascore, then a $610 million finish would be the new record-holder for a Pixar film domestically, beating Incredible 2's $608.5M. have to very least $500M seems certain.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die came in 2nd with $33M for an impressive 41.6% hold. That's $1M less than Bad Boys for Life's $34M second weekend, which was down by 45.6% from its opening. Its $112.2M running total makes it the 7th biggest movie of the year - just behind Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire's $113.1M. Its $214.6M global total already passed Ghostbusters' $201.4M. And the Bad Boys franchise has now made $1B worldwide over its four entries.
3rd place belongs to a resurgent Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with $5.2M - down only 4% from last weekend.
It's now pushing $160M with a $157.8M running total. 
With $5M, The Garfield Movie dropped from 2nd down to 4th place with the arrival of Inside Out 2. With that, Disney and Sony alternated each spot in the top four. With $78.5M / $217.7M, The Garfield Movie is now top dog -make that top cat - in the franchise surpassing Garfield: The Movie's $75.3M / $208M. The Garfield Movie passes Garfield: The Movie. That's not confusing at all, even without the similar totals.
The Watchers actually had an impressive hold (-47.7%) after a disappointing weekend, with $3.6M. It only adds up to $13.6M after two weeks.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring made $632K. Its sequel, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, made $490K. The Lord of Rings re-releases have totaled $7.2M so far.

Inside Out 2 is Top 2 & it Ain't 2 in Record 2nd Weekend: Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 21-23)

$100M weekends.
Summer is in full swing at the movies.
That's right, for the second weekend in a row Inside Out 2 made $100 plus million, this time $100M on the button. It's the best second weekend since Barbie's $93M last July. It's the seventh best second weekend ever and the first movie to make $100 million in its second weekend since Avengers: Endgame when it made $147.3M in May 2019.
These are some incredible numbers for Inside Out 2. It's already made $355.1M, which makes it the number one movie of the year, crushing Dune 2's $282.1M . Matter fact, it beat Dune 2 with a $30.5M Friday, its 8th day, when it got up to a $285.6 million running total.
It's the same story worldwide, as Dune 2 and its $711.8M haul is no longer the highest grossing movie of the year thanks to Inside Out 2's $724.3M. But it doesn't stop there.It's even crazier when you compare it to its predecessor, Inside Out. Inside Out finished with $356.4M. As you recall, though, the sequel has already made $355.1M after 10 days.
It'll blow past the original tomorrow. $600M definitely on the table, like I said last week, unlike homie over there at Deadline. 
Bad Boys: Ride or Die continues to ride high with $18.7M. Its $146.9M running total passes Bad Boys II's $138.5M total. It's also up to $289.1M globally, again besting Bad Boys II's $273.2M. It passed Ghostbusters ($113.2M) to become the 6th highest grossing movie of the year and is coming for Planet of the Apes ($164.3M) to crack into the top five. It is great to have Summer Blockbuster Will Smith back.

3rd place belongs to newcomer, The Bikeriders with $10M from 2,642 theaters. That's better than April's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare's $8.9M opening from 2,845 theaters. That movie got an A- Cinemascore though and ended up making 20.6M. Audiences gave The Bikeriders a more middling B score, so we'll see if it holds up and legs out in the coming weeks.
The Garfield Movie held the 4th spot down again with $3.6M. Its $85.1M running total makes it the 12th highest grossing movie of the year, juuuuussst behind Wonka's $85.2M gross from 2024.
Fifth place belongs to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, also with $3.6M. It's running total is now $164.3M. Can it top Rise of the Planet of the Apes' $176.7M? Maybe it can. I'm still seeing commercials for this on TV in its 7th week of release.
Notables
Russell Crowe's The Exorcism opened with $2.4M. That's not to be confused with Russell Crowe's The Pope's Exorcist which opened with $9M last year. Still though, it's a record opening for Vertical Entertainment, whom you may know from the masterpiece that is Gotti.
Furiosa fell from top ten to not mentioned at all, finishing in 11th place, as it added $1.3M to bring its total to $66M.
The Fall Guy was the final movie to earn $1M, which brings its running total to $90M, the 10th highest total of the year.
Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos are back with Kinds of Kindness, which debuted in 5 theaters to the tune of $350K. Last year's Poor Things opened in 9 theaters and made $661K. So Kinds of Kindness' $70K per theater average is right behind Poor Things' $73K.
