Fell From Top Five to Not Mentioned at all to Miyazaki's 'The Boy and the Heron' Flick Better Than Yours: Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 8-10)

Miyazaki is back with The Boy and the Heron, his first film in 10 years. And what did it do but open with $12.8M, a Miyazaki record in the US. :ehh: It's been out in his native Japan since July, where it's made $56.1M. So all told so far it's notched $97M worldwide. Moviegoers think the soon to be 83 year still got it; it got an A- CinemaScore. How bout that for a come back. :wow:

the-grey-heron-flying-past-mahito-maki-the-boy-and-the-heron.gif

The Hunger Games continues to hold it down in second place with another $9.4M. With a $135.6M running total, it's now made over 3x its $44.6M opening weekend. :ehh:

cheers-way-to-go.gif

Godzilla Minus One held down third place for the second consecutive weekend with $8.3M. Word of mouth has been great which has helped Godzilla to expand into an additional 232 theaters. Its $25.3M running total is 68.7% greater than its $15M budget. Godzilla continues to crush the buildings.

godzilla-minus-one-godzilla.gif

Trolls Band Together remained in fourth place with $6.2M which was only a -20.8% drop. I sense a theme building. With $83M thus far, it's closing in on its $95M production budget. It's 87% of the way there.

sigh-branch.gif

And Wish finished in fifth with $5.3M. So the 2-5 spots were the same as last weekend. Wish is just shy of $50M with $49.4M so far. It's now made 2.5x its $19.6M opening weekend. It's trying to show them Elemental legs. Even then, we still can't ignore that $200 million budget. High five?

Notables

Like the title says, Beyonce's Renaissance fell from number 1 to number 6 with only $5M. Taylor Swift she is not. BeyHive really abandoned the queen. :skip: Maybe they shoulda played this during the week instead of following The Eras Tour's playbook. :manny:

The Marvels made $1.3M after its theater count was dropped by 500 down to 1,700. It's totaled $82.9M.

Thanksgiving made $1.2M. It's crossed the $30M plateau with $30.4M.

Die Hard is a Christmas movie. It's also 35 years old and brought in $923K from 1,355 theaters.

Emma Stone's buzzy new Frankenstein inspired Poor Things made $644K from 9 theaters.

Oppenheimer expanded back in the 1,316 theaters in made $355K. That makes a $325.7M. running total.

Love Actually was re-released for its 20th Anniversary a la Die Hard and made $280K. It's a movie I've not seen, actually. :skip:

Warner Bros. Got a Golden Ticket with Wonka's $39M Opening: Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 15-17)

Who can take a franchise? Dormant for 18 years. Turn it into a $39 million opening weekend. The Candy Man. Ooh, The Candy Man can. And we only f*** with the Sammy Davis Jr. version.

$39M sounds great for Wonka. It also made $112.4M internationally and totaled $151.4M worldwide. Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opened with $56.1M back in 2005 on its way to a $206.4M domestic total. That $56.1M adjusted for inflation is $88.1M which is 2.25x Wonka's $39M.

Of course, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had Johnny Depp fresh off of his Captain Jack Sparrow performance in 2003 in Pirates of the Caribbean. Wonka has Timothy Chalamet who is the new hotness. I mean I'm seeing this dude and cologne commercials.

Maybe Wonka will have a similar legs though. It got the same A- cinemascore as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which went on to make 3.68x its opening weekend. If Wonka performs the same, it'll end its domestic run with $143.3M, which would be nearly $20M more than its $125M production budget. :patrice:

wonka-timothee-chalamet.gif

The Hunger Games continues to do numbers with another $5.8M. It's made over 3x its opening weekend and is up to $145.2M. That makes it the 17th biggest grosser of the year, just behind Fast X's $145.9M.

excited-yes.gif

Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron had its wings clipped as it fell to #3 with $5.1M. With a $23.1M running total, it's flown past The Pope's Exorcist ($20M) Priscilla, which came out recently ($20.8M) and even Strays ($23.9M).

s4c-cymraeg.gif

With a $4.8M 3rd weekend, Godzilla Minus One finished in 4th place. With $34.2M, it's on the verge of cracking this year's top 50. 50th place is occupied by Wonka with its $39M.

godzilla-destroy.gif

In its 5th weekend, Trolls Band Together finished in 5th place with $4M. Its $88.6M running total moves it past The Nun II's $86.2M for the #25 biggest movie of the year. :lupe: Who knew?

shall-we-dance-spruce.gif

Notables

Only $727K for Silent Night. It's totaled only $7.2M.

Another $515K for Thanksgiving, which will be available on demand on Tuesday. It's up to $31.4M.

The Marvels swapped places with Thanksgiving this weekend and finished with $514K. It's broken the $84M mark. :skip: That means it still hasn't doubled its $46.1M opening weekend. :dead:

The Die Hard re-release made another $350K in its second weekend. It's made $1.7M so far.

I have no interest in seeing Wonka, but that seems like a solid opening and it should be able to have legs with not a ton of family movies it has to compete with. I do want to check out Godzilla Minus One, but will probably wait until streaming.

Aquaman Lost Millions but the Lost Kingdom is still #1 This Christmas: Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 22-24)

The DCEU's swan song is here and how fitting it is that it's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, seeing as they're both water based. :skip: This waterfoul (that's a pun. I didn't misspell it) brought in $28.1M ($40M 4-day). That's 58.6% less than Aquaman's $67.8M debut this very weekend 5 years ago. That's nearly 2.5x less.:dwillhuh:

How could this happen? Well, Aquaman opened in 4,125 theaters to Lost Kingdom's 3,706. The Warner Bros. knew the sequel was dead in the water :wow: and their confidence in this one wasn't there with the lower theater count. It makes sense when you peep the CinemaScores. Aquaman reeled in an A score. Audiences weren't biting as Lost Kingdom nabbed a B score. That's the same score as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which opened with $106.1M. The Flash also got a B and opened with $55M. The recently released The Marvels scored a B and opened with an all-time MCU-low $46.1M.

It's worse than Black Adam, Blue Beetle and Shazam! Fury of the Gods' B+, if you can believe it. And I liked Black Adam and The Flash. How bout that? Black Adam and Blue Beetle leaving Aquaman black and blue. :banderas: Black Adam did a Herculean $67M last year. At least it squashed the Blue Beetle's $25M. :ehh: But it couldn't muster more than Fury of the God's $30.1M? :what: That's unbelievable. The DCEU has mercifully been put out to pasture.

FmO_Fm.gif

Bring on the DCU.

aquaman-2-the-lost-kingdom.gif

Wonka had solid chocolate second weekend of $17.7M which was a 54.6% drop from its debut. That's basically 10% worse than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's 49.7% drop when it made $28.2M. It'll total $83.5M with Christmas.

wonka-tell.gif

Illumination's Migration Christmas bowed to $17M ($12.3M 3-day). That's the worst ever opening for Illumination Studios. That's 44.8% behind previous studio-low Sing 2's $22.3M. It got an A cinemaScore too so it's looking like a flop.

smack-in-the-head-mack-mallard.gif

Rom-com Anyone But You with $8.8M ($6.2M). I don't recall seeing any trailers for this one. It's got Sydney Sweeney, the twins and Glen Powell. It got a B+ CinemaScore so maybe it'll have a lil life in it? It was 58.7% behind Sony's other rom-com, No Hard Feelings, which did $15M in June. That's the difference between Jennifer Lawrence and Sydney Sweeney. Doesn't bode well for Madame Web. :mjlol:

f9963fc8b8211e8ecb2d2f352509432ca83981d5.gif

We got some Bollywood shyt rounding out the top five as Salaar made $6.3M ($5.4M 3-day) from only 802 theaters. :ehh:

Notables

The Iron Claw opened with $7.5M ($5M 3-day). It nabbed an A- CinemaScore.

The Boy and the Heron had crossed $30M with $31.2M.

With $7.4M including Christmas, The Hunger Games passes $150M with $153.6M.

Godzilla Minus One passes $40M with $40.8M.

Poor Things expanded wide to 800 theaters and made $3M over the holiday weekend.

Knew Aquaman wasn't going to do well. DC just has to wait until James Gunn comes through in 2025 with a new Superman.

It's the Most Wonkaful Time of the Year: New Year's Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 29-Jan. 1)

Aquaman may have flooded the streets on Christmas, kinda, a little bit.
goodfellas-de-niro.gif

But after a week, the Candy Man is back on top for New Year's. Wonka made $31.8M ($23.9M 3-day). With $142.7M, Wonka is Warner Bros.' 2nd highest grossing movie of 2023, ahead of The Flash's $108.1M. It's closing in on $400M worldwide with $387.1M.

dance-willy-wonka.gif

Thank Poseidon for Christmas vacation cuz Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was able to hold on very well with $26.3M ($19.5M 3-day). It's 3-day was only down 29.6% from last weekend's $27.7M start. It's totaled $84.6M with its $6.8M New Year's take. Without New Year's, it's made $77.8M which is less than the first Aquaman's $78.5M New Year's weekend haul. :dwillhuh:

aquaman-wonder-woman.gif

Migration didn't migrate from 3rd place and brought in $22.3M ($17.2M 3-day). :skip: With $59.3M, it's made 4.78x its $12.4M opening weekend.

let%27s-fly-pam-mallard.gif

I got my own personal slave. She really got a curfew. Cook, clean for the kid like Celie in Color Purple, which did $17.7M ($13M). That's less than what it made on Christmas Day, when it opened with $18.5M. :picard: But that's the power of Christmas. It got an A CinemaScore and has made $3.2M+ each day its been out so far so far, as its racked up $50M.

young-celie-and-nettie-smile-on-a-tree-the-color-purple-2023.gif

Anyone But You takes 5th place with $11.5M ($9M 3-day). Its $27.5M 11-day running total is 12.6% behind No Hard Feelings' $31.5M. Not bad for Sony's 2 big 2023 rom-com's. :ehh:

Notables

The Boys in the Boat made $11M after making $5.7M on Christmas Day. It got an A CinemaScore.

After a $2.8M Christmas Day opening, Michael Mann's Ferrari, made $5.2M on a B CinemaScore. It's Mann's first theatrical release since 2015's Blackhat, which was only in theaters for 3 weeks and finished with $8M. This far, Ferrari has made 50% more with $12M.

2023 Domestic Box Office Wrap-Up

2023 is in the books for the Domestic Box Office. Deadline was reporting that we made $9 billion this past year, but that does not appear to be the case as the total ended up being $8.9B. If that seems low it's because it is. However, it was up 20.8% over 2022. $7.3B. We're still rebounding from the Hong Kong flu when we hit a low of $2.1B in 2020. :picard:

Yeah the box office has improved year over year for three straight years but gone are the glory days of 2015-2019. That was five consecutive $11B years. If we talking pre-COVID, you have to go back to 2005 to find a number this low for the yearly total. That year son even lower output of $8.8B. :wow:

2023 Studio Market Share

Don't look now but Universal was number one for the second straight year. After a $1.5B 2022, the Comcast crew came through with a $1.8B 2023. $574.9M of that is courtesy of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But still, they also released 43 movies in 2023. So they fed the streets. They had 2 of the top 5 highest grossing movies of the year: the aforementioned Super Mario Bros. and Oppenheimer, which was #5 with $326.1M. They had five films gross $100M. Elite production from Universal. :ehh:

Disney finished in second place for the third straight year. The mouse managed to narrowly edge out the Warner Bros. with $1.44B on 12 releases. That doesn't count their 20th Century movies. Otherwise they woulda been #1. Sorry but you don't get to juke the stats. Disney's top release was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with $358.9M. They did have 3 of the top 10 highest grossers and a couple of high level flops.

Joining Universal and Disney in the billion dollar club was Warner Bros. with $1.4B. They were the only studios with $1B in sales for the year. Of course, WB had the biggest movie of the year: Barbie with $636.2M. They were also responsible for The Flash, one of the biggest disappointments, with $108.1M. :manny:

There used to be "The Big Six" Major Studios. They were Universal, Disney, Paramount, WB, Columbia and 20th Century Fox. Then Disney went and bought Fox so it's now The Big Five. However, there is one studio who has a legit claim for Major status: Lionsgate. In fact, they finished 6th in revenue with $579.7M. That was ahead of 20th Century Studios. Their 12 releases tied Disney and surpassed Paramount's 10. They had 2 of the top 15 biggest movies: John Wick: Chapter 4 ($187.1M) and The Hunger Games ($159.7M). The only thing stopping them from claiming "Major Studio" status is a production lot in Hollywood. For all intents and purposes, they are the 6th member of The Big Six. :ehh:

Biggest Weekends of 2023

How bout two animated movies having bigger weekends than any MCU release? Well, that happened with The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.3M) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($120.6M). In fact, TSMBM had 2 of the 9 biggest weekends. Barbie, which had the biggest weekend with $162M, was the only other film to have 2 in the top 10. That's fitting, considering they were the two highest grossing movies of the year.

Disney was represented well in the top ten. They had Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118.4M) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($106.1M) from the MCU, having the 4th and 5th biggest weekends, respectively. That was the only good news for the MCU, as Guardians 3 went on to make 3x its opening weekend on its way to $358.9M. That wasn't the case for Ant-Man 3, which only made just over 2x its opening weekend, as it finished its run with $214.5M. Miniature legs from this Ant-Man movie. :deadrose:

We can't forget Disney's other flops. The Marvels had the MCU's worst ever opening with a punt $46.1M. :scust: Then there was the $19.6M for Wish, Disney's big 100 year anniversary commemorating animated movie. At least that flop has managed to have some staying power since that first frame flop. It's up to $62M which means it's made 3.15x that disappointing opening weekend. That's not Elemental-level legs, which had a 5.2 multiplier after its opening $29.6M, and finished with $154.4M. Disney had some disappointments but there were successes. :yeshrug:

2023 Domestic Box Office Wrap-Up: Top Grossing Movies of the Year

We get to the highest grossing movies of the year. I wanted to put the top 50 here but I kept getting errors. :unimpressed: Nevertheless, the top ten is here. The biggest surprise had to be Sound of Freedom and its $184.1M. Turfing or not, that's a lotta moula. :manny:

We did have 24 blockbusters, that is, movies that grossed $100M. Disney led with 5. Universal and Paramount each had 4. Lionsgate actually had the same amount as Warner Bros. with 2. :ohhh: Just adding to that Major Studio argument.

How bout disappointments? Without a shadow of a doubt, that goes to The Marvels, which was anything but with $84.4M. :picard: Only good enough for 30th place and the MCU's lowest-ever grossing entry. The Flash out gained it with $108.1M. At least it beat out Blue Beetle's $72.4M. :skip:

I ended up seeing 10 of the top 50 in theaters. In order or Gross:
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
  • Oppenheimer
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
  • John Wick: Chapter 4
  • Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning
  • Scream VI
  • The Flash
  • Evil Dead Rise
  • Cocaine Bear
  • Talk to Me
My favorite had to be Across the Spider-Verse, followed closely by Dead Reckoning. I was most pleasantly surprised with Talk to Me cuz I didn't wanna see it at first but was glad I did. :ehh: And The Flash was actually pretty good.
