The Marvels Has the MCU's Worst Opening of All Time: Weekend Box Office Results (Nov. 10-12)

Higher? Further? Faster? Together? Brie Larson has captained the sinking ship that is The Marvels all the way to the MCU's worst ever opening with a putrid $47M. That shatters the previous record holder, The Incredible Hulk's $55.1M from all the way back in 2008. It's an unbelievable 69.4% drop from Captain Marvel's $153.4M opening in 2018. :wow:

It don't stop there. The (anything but) Marvels' $110.3M global opening is less than Guardians of the Galaxy 3's $118.4M domestic opening. :wow: Its global opening barely outdid Ant-Man: Quantumania's $106.1M domestic opening. :scust: Way to put a stain on the 2023 MCU film releases.

But wait. There's more. That $47M opening is good for only the 40th best of the year. Some other notable releases ahead on the chart? The Flash and its $55M. That didn't have the benefit of a previous billion dollar earning movie preceding it. Just the stench of the recently departed DCEU. How bout some sequels? Creed lll (co-starring Kang the Conqueror himself) did $58.3M. :skip: How bout the $61M opening of Transformers: Rose of the Beasts? Fast X did $67M. John Wick 4 opened to the tune of $73.8M. Not a sequel, but we just had Five Nights at Freddy's just do $80M.

What a disaster. It got an audience B grade from CinemaScore, down from Captain Marvel's A. A complete collapse. :wow: The Marvels, with its 3 stars, bad guy, director, all 3 of its writers, composer and one of its editors, just set women in film back 50 years. :dead:

Superhero fatigue? Or nobody gives a fukk about the Marvels?

Both..but people will still see a supes flick if wom is good.

But I don't think anyone really gave a shyt about Capt Marvel all like that. The trailers didn't exactly give one the idea this movie is worth seeing. Also wom is just that it's alright at best.

Maybe it will increase next weekend...but if if The Hunger Games is actually good with good wom.. then that's a wrap

The Odds are in The Hunger Games' Favor. Can't Say the same for The Marvels: Weekend Box Office Results (Nov. 17-19)

The Hunger Games is back for the first time in 8 years and not better than ever with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes opening to $44M. That is a horrible number for a franchise that had averaged $133.7M over 4 opening weekends. It was the only Hunger Games film to not score an A-/A audience rating from CinemaScore with a B+. Not Katniss is a can miss. :wow:

But, hey, at least it only cost $100M. That means it made 44% of its production budget, unlike The Marvels which only took a pitiful 16.8% of its $274.8M budget on opening weekend.

here-i-am-lucy-gray-baird.gif

Trolls is back at domestic theaters after World Tour released digitally in the Pandemic back in 2020. Trolls Band Together made $30.6M. :ehh: That's a genuine surprise to me, but maybe it shouldn't be. Audiences gave this an A cinemascore just like the first Trolls movie in 2016. This should help Universal make up for the disaster that was Ruby Gillman. Trolls 3 nearly doubled its entire $15.7M run. :wow:

here-we-are-baby-branch.gif

The Marvels takes third place, for now, with a $10.2M second weekend. That number will most likely go down when the official numbers hit tomorrow. I'd expect Thanksgiving to cut this down a spot.

In any event, it's an MCU record setting 77.9% second weekend drop. That's the 27th worst second weekend drop of all time. That's even worse than Five Nights at Freddy's 76.2% drop. But at least that was coming off of an $80M opening. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania's $31.9M, 69.9% second week drop looking real respectable compared to this debacle. And that was the MCU's biggest second weekend drop. :damn:

brie-larson-captain-marvel.gif

That means Eli Roth's Thanksgiving is holding down the 4th spot, for now, with $10.2M. This makes the third Grindhouse fake trailer to spawn a movie, after Machete saw 2 releases and Hobo with a Shotgun. This is when I want to see because I loved Grindhouse, especially Planet Terror. Eli Roth is a Boston guy, from Newton. I went to Eli Roth's Goretorium in Vegas 10 years ago so I gotta represent. They saying this is his best movie and the best stealth Scream movie in recent memory. That claim goes to Sick, to me. Prepare to have the stuffing scared out of you. Enjoy the fake trailer.

Five Nights at Freddy's takes spot number 5 with $3.5M. With a $132.6M running total, it's the 17th highest grossing movie of the year, still trailing Fast X's $145.9M. The Marvels ain't catching it tho. :skip:

So so start for The Hunger Games prequel. Could have legs with the holiday weekend coming up and the somewhat low budget should help it. Still doesn't seem like a franchise people were clamoring to see brought back. I do plan to check it out at some point though.

What did you end up doing? I recommend Hunger Games. Plan to do Thanksgiving this week too.
neither one. My car got broken into Friday night/Saturday morning and i ended up spending the weekend getting the window fixed and cancelling my debit cards and shyt. I might see one of them this week sometime though.

'The Hunger Games' Has Thanksgiving Feast; Gobbles Up $42M: Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office Results (Nov. 22-26)

After an inauspicious opening, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is back with a vengeance with a $42 million Thanksgiving weekend feast. It made $28.8M over the 3-day weekend, which was also number one. So Thanksgiving made a 45.8% difference over the normal 3-day weekend.

That is almost exactly the same difference that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 saw in 2015. Its 3-day take was $52M, while the 5-day Thanksgiving saw $75.9M, which was a 45.96% increase. How's that for Thanksgiving consistency? Just like mama's mashed potatoes and gravy. :ehh:

cheers-way-to-go.gif

Did second place go to Disney's new animated picture commemorating 100 years? You wish. :skip: Nope, it went to Apple TV+'s Napoleon, the new film from Ridley Scott. It's $20.4M 3-day is worse than Apple TV+'s other $200M epic, Killers of the Flower Moon's $23.2M opening. But that's why the holiday is for, which got it to $32.5M. Ridley and Joaquin packing up Marty, Bobby and Leo. :ohhh: At least, commercially. It got a B- CinemaScore to Killer's A- and a 6.7 on IMDb to Killer's 8.0. I never liked Joaquin. Hate Vanessa Kirby, too. :yeshrug:

looking-around-napoleon-bonaparte.gif

Disney's Wish comes in 3rd with a $31.7M 5-day, $19.5M 3-day opening. Another poor opening for a $200M Disney animated feature. Elemental, which was a Pixar flick, did $29.6M and that was seen as a disaster. Obviously it's way better than Strange World which had a disastrous $12.1 million opening this time last year.

Will this have legs like Elemental which made over five times its opening weekend gross for the rest of its run? It's got an A- cinemascore to Elemental's A so word of mouth is not quite as strong. We'll see. I think Elemental's legs are the outlier, not the norm. :manny:

laughing-star.gif

Trolls Band Together had a strong showing with a $25.3M 5-day, $17.5M 3-day weekend. With a $64.4 million domestic running total it passes Trolls World Tour's $49.2 million total gross.

look-at-that-branch.gif

And how fitting is it that on Thanksgiving weekend fifth place would go to Thanksgiving, which carved out $11.1 million 5-day and $7.2M million 3-day totals. A lot of moviegoers went home stuffed and in a body bag. With a $24.1M running total, Thanksgiving is Eli Roth's fifth highest grossing film of his career.

Another $2.3M for Taylor Swift: The Era's Tour. It's up to $178.2M.

Killers of the Flower Moon made $1.4M for a $65.6M running cume.

With only $76.8M after 3 weeks, The Marvels has yet to double its $46.1M opening weekend. :wow:

Beyonce's #1 Album, Renaissance, is Now a #1 Movie: Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 1-3)

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, pretentious title and all (Taylor ain't call her shyt "A Film by Taylor) is the #1 movie in the country with $21M. Nearly a year and a half since the album's release, AMC has seen fit to once again join forces with a musical star to drop a concert film. Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour dwarfed this shyt by 77.4% when it opened with $92.8M. :picard: Both films got A+ CinemaScores. Swifties turned out in full force compared to the BeyHive. :mjpls: Matter fact, The Eras Tour's $33.2M second weekend smoked this shyt by 36.7%. If I was black, I woulda sold half? :lolbron:

beyonce-taylor-swift.gif

The Hunger Games continues to hold strong with a $14.5 million third weekend. That -50.1% hold beats Mockingjay Part 2's -63.7% in its 3rd weekend. It's up to $121.2M. Not bad. There's still a little life left in this franchise yet. :ehh:

excellent-dr-volumnia-gaul.gif

The internationally produced, Godzilla Minus One opened with an impressive $11M. Godzilla may be gigantic but its $15M budget is miniscule and the $11M gross represents 73.3% of said budget. It's already made $34.1M worldwide so profitability is assured. Jeremy Jahns even gave this an awesometacular rating. I'm not a Godzilla fan, though, myself. Not for me. :yeshrug:

godzilla-minus-one-godzilla.gif

Trolls Band Together stayed in fourth place with $7.6 million in its 3rd weekend. Its $74.8M running total is 48.7% of 2016's Troll's $153.7M total.

winking-trolls-band-together.gif

Wish rounded out the top 5 with a paltry $7.4M. That -62.4% drop is even worse than Strange World's -58% drop last year when it made $5M in its 2nd weekend. I know Disney wishes it made more. :wow:

Evidently, it doesn't. :skip:

John Woo's Silent Night was a dud with only $3M. You come back to American cinemas after 20 years and that's what you do? :deadrose: It was no Violent Night, which opened with 4.5x more last year with $13.4M.

With $2.5M, The Marvels is up to $80.7M. It was out grossed by Thanksgiving ($2.6M) and finished in 11th place. Fell from top 10 to not mentioned at all... (Except this blurb).

Beyonce might end up being #1 again next weekend as well.

Not sure I will be hitting the theater in December, if Iron Claw opens wide in my area I might try to see that.

No sense for Beyonce's film to arrive so close to Taylor's, I would have let there be more of a space
