'The Little Mermaid' Don't Sleep with the Fishes; Reels in $95M: Box Office Results (May 26-28)

Disney's The Little Mermaid live action remake jumps out the water and into theaters en route to $95M. It's angling for $117.5M over this Memorial Day holiday weekend. :ehh: It goes without saying that it's the number one movie at the box office. It's the 6th biggest Memorial Day weekend ever, just losing our to Fast & Furious 6's $97.3M.

In fact, it's the 3rd biggest opening weekend, all time for a Disney live action remake, behind The Lion King ($191.7M) and Beauty and the Beast ($174.7M). It just swam it's way past Aladdin's $91.5M opening on Memorial Day weekend back in 2019. Like Aladdin, The Little Mermaid scored an A CinemaScore. And Aladdin went on to make $355.5M, so $370M+ is what I expect from Ariel. Speaking of which, Halle Bailey with them wide eyes, was a perfect choice for a fish based character.

:lolbron:

We knew Fast X was gonna fall off because of The Little Mermaid, but damn, it had a 65.7% MCU like second week drop. It made $23.0M over the weekend and will bank 28.6M over the holiday. In a weird coincidence, it made the exact same $23.0 million in its second weekend as F9. :lupe: And it held on ever so slightly better than F9's 67.2% second weekend drop. It's up to $107.9M domestic and $507.2M worldwide. :damn:It's running neck and neck with F9, whose 2nd weekend also fell on a holiday, the 4th of July. It racked up $122.2M to Fast X's $113.6M. :manny:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. conveniently took 3rd with $19.9M and $25.3M over the four days. It currently stands at $299.4M domestic; $304.7M after the holiday. Vol. 2 tallied $301.3M after its 3rd weekend. It stands at a cool $723.4M worldwide. :wow:

The Super Mario Bros. Movie drops down to 4th with another $6.2M; $8.3M four day total. It'll total $560.9M domestic, which moves it past The Lion King's $543.6M, to become the 14th highest grossing movie ever, domestically. Its $1.27B worldwide running total now makes it the 20th biggest movie ever, edging out Beauty and the Beast's $1.26B. Next up? Frozen and its $1.28B. Sorry, Elsa, but it's

The Machine debuted in 5th place with $4.9M; $5.8 four day total. I saw this trailer play before a couple movies I've seen over the last couple of months.

It did nothing for me. :yeshrug: The reviews are poor, with

Not for me but it's also got a 7.0 on IMDb and Mark Hamill is supposed to be pretty good in it. :manny:

Notables

Robert DeNiro's About My Father debuted with $4.2M. It got a solid B+ CinemaScore which should propel it to a $5.2M four day.

Gerard Butler is back with Kandahar, which made $2.4M. It is also rocking a B+ CinemaScore, same as Plane. Plane had a much wider opening in 3,023 theaters compared to Kandahar's more modest 2,105. It'll take home $3M over the four day weekend.

With another $1M, Evil Dead Rise has crossed the $65M mark, with $66.2M.

The Fast and Furious franchise fake killing off characters was always goofy because at some point some were going to have to die for real once contracts got too expensive.

They like to talk about family, but who in the family is willing to take a paycut to save other people as that film might not even hit $800 million worldwide.

Curious to see how the domestic/foreign split pans out for Fast X

Don’t think there’s even been Hollywood blockbusters with such a diverse cast, and that skew so much to the foreign box office

All that outrage is just the loud minority.

Nah It's doing bad overseas. It needs that international money and it looks like audiences are not showing up.

A diverse cast, but it's a series that's been mostly spearheaded by a White Paul Walker and a racially ambiguous, Vin Diesel. Combined with the fast cars, crazy, globe spanning action,.etc it's no surprise it's become a reliable brand for foreign audiences.

I'm starting to think Vin talking about all these spinoffs is him trying to boost the excitement for the franchise and boost Fast X's box office
the Torettos spinoff news was so left field though :dead:
Does that spin-off include making Fast X part of a trilogy or is this new?

he's saying the spin offs would happen after the fast x trilogy concludes
But even when the main story does reach the eventual finish line, don't expect Fast & Furious to shut its engines off for good. More spinoffs in the vein of 2019's Hobbs and Shaw are on the way, including a female-led movie project Diesel's been developing since 2017.

"The sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the spinoffs,” he promised.

The fact that this is tanking overseas is very telling. Don’t know how Disney is going to skin this. That “scuttlebutt” song sung by blaccent-having Awkwafina is is bizarre and doesn’t fit in with the rest of the score. It’s the music equivalent of sticking a thumb tack in your urethra
