Mario & Luigi are now the Super Billionaire Bros: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 28-30)

Let's not bury the ledge. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed $1,022,473,825. That's 1 billion dollars. Illumination's, Minions: The Rise of Gru, came close last year, with $939.6M. Mario and Luigi got the job done. :wow: That was aided with a $40M 4th weekend, the best ever for a Universal movie and the 7th best ever at the domestic box office. Mario beat out Spider-Man: No Way Home's $32.6M 4th weekend with ease. It's looking up at the Avatar and Top Gun sequels and their 4th weekend tallies of $45.8M and $44.6M, respectively. It'll probably be a little less, though, come tomorrow.

What about animation? Its $490M running tally passes Finding Dory's $486.2M, to become the 2nd highest grossing animated movie of all time, domestically. Incredibles 2 and its $608.5M sits at the top.

mario-luigi.gif

Evil Dead Rise remained in 2nd place, only down 50.2% for a cool $12.2M. That's a great horror hold but nowhere near Smile's 18% decline in its 2nd weekend. It's much more in line with The Black Phone's 48% hold which coincidentally, also equalled a $12.2M weekend. But The Black Phone was sitting on $47.4M after its second weekend, while Evil Dead Rise has totalled $44.4M. So maybe it's looking at something in the $80-85M range when it finishes its run.

evil-dead-rise-mommy.gif

We got newcomer, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. taking 3rd place with $6.8M. It touts an A CinemaScore but I think I remember seeing a trailer for it once? Or maybe I just remember the long ass title? It only did $600K in previews. BoxOfficePro was projecting $13M. They missed the mark.

giphy.gif

Oh, just remembered where I know the title from.

John Wick: Chapter 4 held down 4th place for the 2nd weekend in a row, with $5M. Its $176.1M domestic running total makes it the highest grossing entry in the John Wick franchise. That's how you go out on a high note. At the head of the table. :wow:

giphy.gif

You do now. :blessed:

Closing out the top 5 was a 40 year old classic, from a galaxy far, far, away: Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi brought home $4.6M in the 40th year anniversary re-release. It did $45.4M back in 1997 when George Lucas came through with the special effects laden Special Edition. It only played in 475 theaters in 2023 but was the top average grosser this weekend, at $9.8K per theater. So, in that sense, the Ewoks were mightier than the Mario Bros. :skip:

Notables

Sony's, Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World, only did $3M From 3,054 theaters, despite the A- CinemaScore. :picard: It's aight, George. That Foreman Grill with the two top bun warmers was the truth. :wow:

The Pope's Exorcist finished in 12th place with $1.75M. It has an $18M running total.

Renfield placed 14th with $1.2M. It's up to $16.3M.

Beau Is Afraid added 1,160 theaters, as it expanded to 2,125, yet it was down 46% and only made $1.4M. :lolbron:

Move Over, Mario. The Guardians are the #1 Movie in the Galaxy: Weekend Box Office Results (May 5-7)

All right, the first weekend in May has passed so the summer movie season is officially here with the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn's MCU swan song. And it debuted to the tune of $118.4 million, $8.4 mill north of the Disney projected $110 million. So it's a win in that regard. It grossed $288.3 million worldwide.

In fact, that $118.4 mill is good for the 12th best May weekend of all time, just behind 2007's Shrek the Third's $121.6 million. :jbhmm:So a supposed trilogy capping 16 year old movie made more than a trilogy capping MCU movie in 2023? :deadrose:

And this is with an A CinemaScore, which every Guardians movie has received. Speak of the other Guardians movies, Vol. 3 opened 19% off of Vol. 2's $146.5 million back in 2017. :francis:
If it has similar legs as Vol. 2, then it could be looking at $315 mill but does that seem feasible after Ant-Man 3 finished its run with $213.7 million?

laughing-star-lord.gif

The Super Mario Bros. Movie crossed $500 million with an $18.5 million weekend. It accomplished the milestone in 31 days. That makes it the 12th fastest movie to cross $500M at the domestic box office, just a day behind Top Gun: Maverick. It's now at a $518 million domestic running total and $1.1 billion worldwide.

mario-mario-kart.gif

Evil Dead Rise brought home another $5.8 million which was good for third place. That constituted a 52% drop in its 3rd weekend. It's falling behind The Black Phone's pace, which saw a 36% hold in its 3rd weekend and a $64.2 million running total. Evil Dead Rise is now at $54.2 million, which is 15.6% off The Black Phone's pace over the first 3 weeks.

Coming in 4th was Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. with $3.2 million. It's got an A CinemaScore and is currently sitting on an 8.0 rating on IMDb. :ohhh: It's made a respectable $12.5 million over 2 weeks against a $30 million production budget.

giphy.gif

Love Again debuted with $2.4 million and rounds out the top 5. It's been a rough couple of weeks for Priyanka Chopra. The Citadel dropped on Prime and is rocking a rock solid 6.4 on Amazon-owned IMDb. :troll: This shyt here has a 6.1 rating on IMDb and a 34 on Metacritic. :banderas:

Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World saw a 71% drop in its 2nd weekend as it took home $824K :picard:

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was back in 185 theaters and made $751K :ohhh: Really capitalizing on that Guardians stimulus.

@Avisible Man with the reminder of how much pull that Shrek franchise has with the general audiences. Imagine the numbers for 5 when it drops. Between that and god knows how many Nintendo adaptations, Universal is gonna be eating real good.

Gonna see Guardians again tomorrow. Last time I did that for an MCU flick was when No Way Home dropped. The fact that it nabbed an ‘A’ Cinemascore despite its dark tones is impressive. Domestic numbers so far are in line with what was predicted by trackers. A $700-750 million global pull by the end sounds just about right and would be a big dub for Marvel coming off of Ant-Man. :wow:

Guardians was great and should have way better legs than Ant-Man. Aside from Fast X, not much competition in May.

Peeps tired of MCU:patrice:
Guardians has no connective tissue to the overarching story :manny:

Still a great movie :wow:

My prediction coming true:wow:

They are phasing out of all of these characters. Giving them an ending story,or transitioning them to the disney app.

X-men will be standalone in a completely different universe. Where we will get new imaginings of Captain America,Thor,Iron Man and especially Hulk:blessed:

Thats another 30 years of trilogys and trillions. :myman:

That build up to Xmen vs Avengers:whoo:

Word of mouth has been very strong. If Deadline is saying a 51% drop, the chances of it being sub 50% is pretty good. Hopefully Marvel can look at the Guardians' success in Gunn's absence and see what worked. For comp, this is where the movie is sitting with the other MCU titles:

Marvel Cinematic Universe 2nd Weekend Drops:
  1. Black Panther -44.7%
  2. Thor -47.2%
  3. Doctor Strange -49.5%
  4. Iron Man -49.9%
  5. Marvel's The Avengers -50.3%
  6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 -51% (Projection)
  7. Spider-Man: Far From Home -51%
  8. Thor: Ragnarok -53.5%
  9. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings -54.0%
  10. Guardians of the Galaxy -55.3%
  11. Avengers: Infinity War -55.5%
  12. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 -55.5%
  13. Captain Marvel -55.7%
  14. Ant-Man -56.5%
  15. Captain America: The Winter Soldier -56.6%
  16. Thor: The Dark World -57.3%
  17. Iron Man 3 -58.4%
  18. Avengers: Endgame -58.7%
  19. Avengers: Age of Ultron -59.4%
  20. Iron Man 2 -59.4%

It's a Marvel Miracle! Guardians Vol. 3 Manages a Marvelous Weekend Vol. 2: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 12-14)

The big question with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was "would it drop ~70 in its second weekend" like a lot of the MCU films since the Hong Kong Flu hit. For reference, Black Widow fell by 68%, Eternals by 62%, No Way Home fell 67% but that was after a $260.1M opening. Multiverse of Madness saw a 67% drop. Love and Thunder took a nice little 68% tumble. Wakanda Forever fared a little better with a 62% ease. Quantumania saw a gargantuan 70% drop. :damn:

Who am I forgetting? Oh, Shang-Chi. I didn't forget it. I separated it cuz it was the exception to that 66% drop on average. Shang-Chi held on with a 54% decline in its second weekend. Well, add Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to that shortlist. With a second weekend haul of $60.5M, it held on with an incredible 48.9% drop, the best MCU 2nd weekend hold post COVID. :whoo:

That's a better hold than Vol. 2's 55% drop when it took home $65.2M in its second weekend back in 2017. Add it all up and Vol. 3 is already at a $213.2M running total, just $900K behind Quantumania's $214.1M. And it's already totaled $475.71M worldwide, again, just behind Quantumania's $475.76M. :picard:

gotg-game.gif

☝🏾Game was excellent too.

Holding down the 2nd spot for the 2nd weekend in a row was none other than The Super Mario Bros. Movie with another $13M. What a month for Nintendo with the recent release of the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom videogame. That makes $535.9M domestic and $1.21B for Mario.

super-mario-movie-super-mario-bros.gif

The next chapter of Book Club, aptly subtitled The Next Chapter, debuted with $6.5M. That's a far cry from 2018's $13.5M opening when it played at 2,781 theaters. That movie scored an A- CinemaScore and went on to make $68.5M domestic and $106.2M worldwide. The Next Chapter played in 3,508 theaters. That's a 26% theater increase, with higher ticket prices, and a 51.9% decline from the original. Makes sense when you see the CinemaScore fell off to a B as well.

we-still-got-it-diane.gif

:flabbynsick:

Falling one spot to take 4th place was Evil Dead Rise with $3.7M. It's now pushed past $60.1M in its 4th weekend. The Black Phone was already at $62.4M after its 3rd weekend. It had totaled $72.1M after 4 weeks. That means Evil Dead is running 16.6% off The Black Phone's pace. Thankfully, it's made more overseas with $61M. :manny:

e8991749eaa88648a85dac35e76f7c1ccd3902eb.gif

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. rounded out the top 5 with $2.5M. With $16.4M, it's now grossed 54.6% of its $30M production budget.

The Ben Affleck starring and Robert Rodriguez directed Hypnotic, debuted with $2.3M from 2,118 theaters, barely averaging more per theater than a 3 week old Are You There God. :scust:This shyt was distributed by Ketchup Entertainment. :dead: That might be worse than Bussa Bus' Dangertainment from Halloween Resurrection. :mjlol: The C+ CinemaScore tells you that the audience was t feeling this one. Sorry, Ben. I'ma watch AIR since it's on Prime now, to help ya out.
