All 'Transformers,' Stop 'Spider-Man!' Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 9-11)
It took the Maximals joining forces with the Autobots to get the job done; the Transformers were able to stop Spider-Man. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opened with a surprising $60.5M to wrestle first place away from Across the Spider-Verse.
The battle was won on Friday, with a $25.6M "opening day." It actually opened on Wednesday when it did $1.2M in special previews. It produced $7.6M in traditional Thursday previews. And that was enough to secure the weekend cuz Spider-Man won both Saturday and Sunday, despite Rise of the Beast's strong A- CinemaScore.How does the seventh movie compare to the rest of the franchise? The aforementioned A- CinemaScore equaled Bumblebee's and scored better than The Last Knight's B+. Bumblebee opened with $21.6M just before Christmas of 2018. That was enough to finish in 3rd place. That movie only had a $102M budget though. The last film to carry the Transformers title, The Last Knight, opened in first place with $44.6M. That movie had a $217M budget. Rise of the Beast's $195M budget is much more tame. Looks like Paramount learned their lesson. Cut the budget for the smaller Bumblebee. Profit. They scaled it up accordingly given the summer blockbuster status.
With an opening 35.7% ahead of The Last Knight, which finished with $130.1M, can The Beasts Rise up and take $175M?
Spidey settled for a second place finish with $55.4M, despite beating out Transformers on Saturday and Sunday. Them's the breaks.
Down only 54.1% in its second weekend means it was damn near even with Into the Spider-Verse's 53.4% second weekend hold. And with a running total of $225.4M, Across the Spider-Verse has now obliterated the multiverse and Into the Spider-Verse's $190.2M domestic total. 
It's the same story around the globe with ATS-V webbing up $389.9M. ITS-V finished with $375.5M. Earth-42 Miles looking at Earth-1610 Miles like "you not on my level, get your brakes tweaked / I sold what your whole album sold in my first week." 
The Little Mermaid held strong with a $22.7M 3rd weekend. It was down 44.9%. A little bit behind Aladdin's $24.6M, 42.4% 3rd weekend hold. Ariel's $228.8M after 3 weeks is only 1.6% off Aladdin's $232.5M. Like Jimmy Conway said,
That was a great pun though. 
Speaking of holding strong, that's exactly what the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continue to do to the tune of a $7M sixth weekend. It's actually holding better than Guardians 2, which was down 35.8% in its sixth weekend.
Can Vol. 3 cross $350M? It's got a chance with $335.4M already accumulated. Groot, keep shooting and you'll get there.
The Boogeyman had a tremendous 44% hold in the all important horror second weekend. It made $6.9M and is now up to $24.7M. It's up to $39.6M worldwide and is poised to overtake the other recent Disney horror release, Barbarian with its $45.3M global total. Barbarian actually held even stronger with a 38.4% decline in its second weekend but The Boogeyman opened higher and it's $6.9M this week beat Barbarian's $6.5M.
Then again, the budget for this Stephen King adaption is between $30-35M, compared to Barbarian's minuscule $4.5M. Barbarian definitely didn't feel like it was that cheap. At least, it didn't look like it was. Either way, I'm sure Disney is happy and The Boogeyman looks like it'll have some good legs. What it may not make domestically, it should compensate with overseas.
Notables
Fast X is now streaming via Premium On-Demand after 21 days. That's part of Universal and AMC's deal they signed a few years ago. It's up to $652.7M worldwide, closing in on F9's $726.2M. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the 18th highest grossing movie ever with $1.314B, moving past Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's $1.310B.

A 'Flash' in the Panned: Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 16-18)
The Flash is here and it looks like it's gonna be gone in a flash.
But it did debut in first place with $55.1M. That was good enough to make back 27.6% of its $200M production budget. Black Adam, which didn't have two Batmen, opened with $67M on a $200M production budget (which ballooned higher due to reshoots). On the plus side, it's nearly out grossed Shazam 2's $57.6M domestic total. It's the same globally, with The Flash opening with $130.1M, almost overtaking Shazam 2's $132.2M total.The disappointing start makes sense. Black Adam and Shazam 2 both received B+ cinemascores. The Flash? A flat B.
So word of mouth was not that good. That explains the 36% drop from Friday to Saturday. Black Adam and Shazam 2 saw 11% and 6% drops from Friday to Saturday. I may have to wait to see this on Max. But I wanna see Sasha Calle's fine ass on the big screen.

Pixar's Elemental opened with $29.5M, which was just enough to edge out the webslinger. That opening is 41.6% below Lightyear's $50.5M start. That opening is even more disappointing when you consider that both movies had $200M production budgets.
Its A CinemaScore was even better than Lightyear's A- and it still flopped. Matter fact, it lost Saturday and Sunday to Spider-Man, after winning Friday, which is exactly what happened last week with Transformers.
That leads us to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It slipped to 3rd place with $27.8M. That was down nearly 50% from last week. Into the Spider-Verse was up 14% in its 3rd weekend but that was due to playing the weekend between Christmas and New Year's. Through 3 weeks, Across the Spider-Verse has totaled $280.3M. Guardians 3 had pulled in $266.9M in its first 3 weeks and is still going strong with $344.3M. So it's running 5% ahead of the Guardians' pace.
Miles is on a mission and he ain't glitching out.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts took a little 67.2% tumble down to $20M, as it fell to 4th place. Bumblebee did $20.9M in its second weekend and only fell 3% from its $21.6M opening. It's actually a bigger drop than the The Last Knight's 62% decline in 2017.
But it joins the $100M club along with every film in the Transformers series, save for the animated one. 
The Little Mermaid rounded out the top five with $11.6M. It's grossed $253.5M, $3.5M more than its $250M production budget. It took four weeks but it got there.
Notables
The Blackening opened with $6M. It got a B+ CinemaScore but I never liked the trailers for this when I saw them in the theater. I always felt like the cacs in the audience were looking at me.
Looking good with the critics, too.
The Boogeyman has passed $30M domestically and $50M globally. It's passed Barbarian's $45.3M global total.
Wes Anderson's Asteroid City debuted in 6 theaters in NY and LA and made $790K.

I know Mario’s mega success got Universal kicking their feet back but I feel like the dual theater and streaming release they got planned for Five Nights at Freddy’s in October will sabotage their chances at another hit. It’s not like it’s Rated R either…

I saw that film a year or 2 ago and liked it.
i blame it all on marketing. I don’t even remember hearing about Good Dinosaur, and I only heard about Elemental from the trailer in the Flash film.
Yeah, the marketing was ass. Visually, it also looks like a downgrade from Inside Out. Sony Animation went from Over the Hedge and Open Season to putting out the Spider-Verse movies, so I do think Pixar will bounce back at some point. It’s just rough right now though.I saw that film a year or 2 ago and liked it.

Pete Docter, who’s the boss, comes across as someone who’s a talented ass artist, but doesn’t have the business acuity down pat.

I doubt they’ll ever do an R rated animated film. MAYBE a pg13 one, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
