Myself and a couple other coli dudes been talking about this thing in real estate threads for a while.

Covid may have accelerated this thought process but the real estate market in the Bay Area and some of these other metropolises were absolutely batshyt insane and something was going to have to give.

And get this....all that bluster about how companies wont pay SF salaries for remote work....trust me there are companies out there waiting to poach good employees who will do just that...and it WILL become a recruitment tool. It will slowly start to happen

The thing is, people used to try to do this with federal jobs in CA. They would work in CA for maybe 6 months to a year as a federal employee. Then they would transfer to a lower cost of living state (Arizona, Nevada, or Texas) and they would keep their same salary. Well the feds caught on and put a stop to that. So if you move, your salary changes too.

I am sure these tech companies are looking into that. Like yeah, stay home...move to another state, but don't think you are going to take your San Francisco/Silicon Valley salary to Dallas or Memphis. It might work in situations where it's just a couple people....but if you have a BUNCH of people doing it, they are going to make a change.

Smart
I can see it happening in other expensive places

hell i'm in Toronto right now if I could work from home permanently or just have to come in once or twice a month or even once a week. I’d fully move to Niagara or London Ontario and pay peanuts for a big ol property

Great post OP I was thinking the same thing a few weeks ago.

I can see some of these companies start to make their employers update if they are moving to another state or region. To then change their salary based on that region, area or state.

Cause we all know if you work for say Boeing in Seattle your salary is higher than Boeing in South Carolina. So expect companies to adjust.

if you not supporting hardware physically, whats the point of coming in ?

Yeah I never understood this. I myself have always had to touch hardware from time to time. Or support operations / Manufacturing. So for me working from home wasn't always 100 percent possible.

But some of these software folks I never understood this. Even when software was implemented for hardware and there were failures. The hardware engineers would just give the software engineers a run down of all the faults. Then the software engineers would run a patch which the hardware engineers would upload to the unit or board or system.

IMO its just culturally how things were done. Especially when I worked in DoD when working from home was shunned on. Cause the entire concern was folks not clocking hours truthfully which is a federal offense and could get folks fired or worse.

I was thinking about this. I got the email today that they don't know when or if my office will be opening back up, but we'll still be working from home. Works out great because I was already scouting places to move pre-corona. So if I can move and not have to worry about looking for new employment, that will be great.

working in the office is overrated as fukk when most people work behind a computer 99% of the time. Sure it's nice to chit chat and go to happy hours, but other than that, it ain't really that much different than WFH. Commercial real estate is going to take a huge dump

I agree. Like you said I can see commercial real estate hurting. But in certain fields I can see companies better using that space.

Take Manufacturing and technology companies. Testing or machining was always a bottle neck. Now I can see them getting more manufacturing machines or test equipment. I remember when I worked in aerospace getting enough ess chambers was always the issue. We didn't have enough ess chambers and that caused bottle necks when you wanted to shake and bake equipment which caused delivery delays.

So with more equipment a smart brotha like @Buckeye Fever can probably run 2 or 3 CNC machines at one time in parallel.....:wow:

That might work for some people, but I think that’s a short sighted strategy. There’s nothing like being where the action is. If you’re trying to move up in the tech industry, and you’re not in a major tech city, that’s like being an up and coming actor and living thousands of miles away from Hollywood. You’re simply gonna miss out on opportunities. Proximity is huge and this corona thing will blow over, eventually.
