Baz Luhrman definitely fully embraced his worst impulses in alll ways possible in this, from the massive distracting and hollow looking CGI sets, (think 'Hugo), the excessive party scenes, in a variety of ways he does his best to not only create a ridiculous environment, that distracts from the story and it's message. All the over stylization of everything really hurts it, fukk the Jay songs, the quick edits, all the bullshyt was much worse, why does he love those fake looking sets? Shoot something REAL. However, there are incredible moments and the soundtrack has some hauntingly beautiful music, which creates some amazing scenes between Leo and Daisy. All the acting is fantastic, though Mcguire doesn't quite work for me. Tom is overplayed, hilarious at times, but overplayed,no doubt. Whenever Luhman stops showing off and lets the actors and sets breathe without his gaudy nonsense, the movie is captivating and breathtaking at times. Unfortunately, the message and overall themes of the novel are mostly lost here, a victim of the directors own tendencies of excess and over indulgence. I love that Lana Del Ray song, perfect for this. Can't say enough that Luhrman went way too far, and I found myself wishing for a quiet, subtler, director to let the material flow naturally as it should. The cartoon sets and the cartoonishness of it all are embarrassing.
