superman did have his own television series before batman. i was talking about the adam west movie, which was just the tv show brought to the big screen.

The comics are the source material. Whoever was more popular there translate to having a larger audience base before going mainstream. However it doesn't matter as Batman was far larger in the mainstream than Superman was anyway.

no f'n way is batman a bigger mainstream cultural icon than the big S, it's not even up for debate.

Bruh, you seem to be discrediting everything that Batman paved the way for first. Nobody here, including me, is saying Superman ISN'T known and ISN'T popular, but you have absolutely no substantial evidence to prove Sueprman is more popular than Batman meanwhile EVERY single piece of data we have says Batman is more popular.

batman sells more albums these days but that's because he's made better albums. the superman brand will always be more universal. they just haven't capitalized on it in a long time.

if you wanna talk about movie figures, batman begins made less money than superman returns and they came out only a year apart. yea i know it was the first superman movie in 20 years and batman was coming off only a 7 year hiatus... but then you take into account that man of steel, which was also a reboot and and origin story coming off a stinker... broke the record for all time openings in june.

the interest in superman has been and will always be there. the hype for MOS was very, very real. they just didn't deliver. if they did we wouldn't be having this conversation.

To be fair, your argument was cultural icon, not comic book sales. Comic books weren't even very mainstream until recently, so if you want to assert that Superman is the most popular super hero worldwide, the most iconic, then comic book sales would only be one slice of the pie. Plus I'm sure someone could make the argument that Superman was the biggest super hero cultural icon at the beginning of the comic book craze, being that he was the first american superher - or at least was recognized as the first- and sales reflected that, but times have changed. Similar to how Princeton was once the dominant college football team in the country, and have the most national championships in college football history, but few people would consider them now, after the game has changed, as the most popular or prestigious or dominant college football power.
