They're a lot closer in raw mechanics than purists of either sport are willing to admit. It's true that soccer requires more skill, and less athleticism but the gap is surprisingly close on both ends.
The elements of skill for basketball are kind of under played and discarded, whereas there is this weird thought process that just anyone can stay on the pitch with consistent movement against professional athletes for 45 minutes without stoppage.
They're real close, folks.
Skillwise it’s football and it isn’t even close.
There’s a reason guys can start playing basketball in their late teens and make it but not in football.
That... Has way to less to do with skill than the way the sport is set up. Basketball is arguably the only sport with a clear genetic requirement to play. It favours the tall. Meaning at some point the pool of potential players is forced down. When a pool becomes small, you have outliers who can dominate the sport with minimal effort.
It's more to do with numbers than a lack of skill requirement. The sheer number of people who play soccer worldwide means you have a greater pool of gifted players who played longer than you. And there is no eventual genetic roadblock once they enter their teens so you can't exactly compete.
