They're a lot closer in raw mechanics than purists of either sport are willing to admit. It's true that soccer requires more skill, and less athleticism but the gap is surprisingly close on both ends.

The elements of skill for basketball are kind of under played and discarded, whereas there is this weird thought process that just anyone can stay on the pitch with consistent movement against professional athletes for 45 minutes without stoppage.

They're real close, folks.

Skillwise it’s football and it isn’t even close.

There’s a reason guys can start playing basketball in their late teens and make it but not in football.

That... Has way to less to do with skill than the way the sport is set up. Basketball is arguably the only sport with a clear genetic requirement to play. It favours the tall. Meaning at some point the pool of potential players is forced down. When a pool becomes small, you have outliers who can dominate the sport with minimal effort.

It's more to do with numbers than a lack of skill requirement. The sheer number of people who play soccer worldwide means you have a greater pool of gifted players who played longer than you. And there is no eventual genetic roadblock once they enter their teens so you can't exactly compete.

Show me a basketball equivalent of the second gif lemme see how impressive it is :ehh:

I said soccer takes more skill, basketball takes more athleticism.
This isn't really that difficult of a question imo.

A freak of nature athlete means nothing in soccer because its such a skilled based game.
But a guy who has a 48inch vertical, can bench press 365 and squat 405 is an automatically plus in basketball even if he's just there for rebounds and catching alleys

I dont think you're wrong, but i think it has alot to do with both.

You aren't going to "pick up" soccer in a few years the way some of these NBA players picked up basketball in college or late high school.
Yes its mainly because they were so tall and basketball favors height... but that's part of the point is it not?

The fact that you can be a tall athlete with relative no skills and make it into the NBA is further evidence of what breh is saying.

Oh okay I get you. By athleticism I assumed you were talking strictly about how they move and the ability to accomplish some freakish feats.

It's harder to do a crossover with your feet than with your hands
just because something is harder doesn't mean that it requires more athleticism. It's harder to touch your nose with your tongue than it is to just jog. The thing that makes the crossover hard is the rule limiting soccer players to their feet not the actual energy behind the soccer crossover. Humans have more dexterity in our arms and hands than our feet. But soccer requires more stamina because your running back and forth chasing a ball for 2 hours. Out of the two sports in the title basketball is more entertaining to watch imo and requires more athleticism

I mean that's part of it yeah, but there's less of an athletic barrier of entry to accomplish those feats.
No doubt there's some crossover with athletic skillful and pure athleticism.

but anybody can the mechanics of a bicycle kick.
Hitting the ball with it off of a volley and scoring? Now that takes seroius skill.

But not everybody, skilled or otherwise can do a 360 dunk on a 10ft rim. :yeshrug:
