Akeem Olajuwon played only soccer up until his late teen when he started playing BBall and ended up becoming one of the greatest NBA players. That can never happen with a BBall player.
I take Olajuwon's peak and it matches up favorably against ANY NBA player ever..EVER.
Because of his success, several African born centers were drafted after him and most were complete busts...
the entire " oh, he grew up playing soccer....he should have the lateral quickness and footwork to make it in the NBA" was a myth.
There's a Jadakiss line
"I'm the reason dudes got deals the past few years/
sound anything like Kiss, then sign right here/"
Olajuwon was a phenomenal athlete, and he was groomed/mentored by the late Moses Malone since he stepped foot on the University of Houston campus. Coaches had him playing summer pickup games in the area when Malone was in town.
Olajuwon, a skinny guy who just started playing basketball years earlier was getting his ass handed to him by a peak NBA MVP center. Baptism by fire. Those games helped (H)Akeem's development more than anything..as he had to adapt to not get humiliated .
I get the point you're trying to make, but 6'10" exceptional athlete groomed by an alltime NBA great is such an outlier that I'm not sure it's the right example to use.
