The Big Movie Blockbusters of Summer 2018

Barbie (June 29)

Despite losing Amy Schumer from the lead role, Sony is still pressing ahead with its live action Barbie movie, that Diablo Cody, Kim Caramele, and Jenny Bicks have been working on the screenplay for. Given that the film doesn’t have a director in place as this article is being written, it may yet be a project Sony pushes back. The studio hasn’t announced Schumer’s replacement yet either. Watch this space…

After losing Amy Schumer due to scheduling conflicts, Sony looks to have found its replacement for the upcoming live-action “Barbie” pic, with Anne Hathaway in talks for the lead role.

Australian “Fun Mom Dinner” director Alethea Jones is in talks to helm the comedy.

Studio reps said the casting is premature as scheduling arrangements have not been worked out and there is no deal as yet.

The big screen adaptation of Mattel’s iconic toy line was originally expected to start production on June 23, but Schumer’s busy schedule included a promotional tour for her new Fox comedy “Snatched,” as well as shooting for Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me” opposite Steve Carell.

Sony still intends to stick to its projected June 29, 2018 release date, though it’s not clear when production would start. Mattel already has merchandise and product cycles in motion, and shifting the production to accommodate Schumer would have put on a strain on other partners on the film, according to insiders.

In "Barbie", the main character gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and lands in a real-world adventure.

Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal are producing the film. Richard dikkson, president and COO of Mattel, is executive producing.

Bad news #barbiegang

The movie has been delayed until 2020

Sony has pushed the release of its live-action “Barbie” movie back nearly two years from Aug. 8 to May 8, 2020.

Anne Hathaway is expected to star. Amy Schumer left the project last March, citing scheduling conflicts, and Hathaway was reported in talks last summer.

Alethea Jones is directing the film, which has been developed in the vein of “Splash,” “Enchanted” and “Big” with the main character getting kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and winding up in a real-world adventure. Lindsey Beer, Jenny Bicks, Kim Caramele, Diablo Cody, Bert V. Royal, Hilary Winston and Schumer have all worked on the script.

Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal are producing the film. Parkes and MacDonald initiated the original deal with Sony and Mattel in 2014.

Mattel began selling Barbie dolls in 1959. Since then, Barbie has had 150 careers including serving as a princess, president, mermaid and movie star. Her signature pink Malibu mansion and sports car are also likely to be featured on the big screen. She’s also appeared in all three “Toy Story” films.

It’s the second date change for “Barbie.” Sony had originally dated the movie for June 29, 2018, then moved it back six weeks. “Barbie” is the first title to be dated on May, 8, 2020.

Sony also dated its “Superfly” reboot, starring Jason Mitchell, Andrea Londo and Trevor Jackson, for June 15. It will open against Disney-Pixar’s “The Incredibles 2” and Warner Bros-New Line’s comedy “Tag.”
