That initial cut to Justin Long’s character upon the reveal of the monster was a ballsy move by the director. The tone gets flipped on its head in a love it or hate it way and all of a sudden you’re watching the film through another character’s perspective. I can see a lot of people being frustrated at that particular sequence.
That being said, I still fukking love it on rewatch. My main issue with this film was the last half hour regressing to a monster flick that’s been played out before. The positives outweigh the negatives for me though. Thought it did a good job interweaving its themes within the story and man, I wish I had a solid surround system to capitalize on the fantastic sound design.
Barbarian is firmly in my top 3 horror releases of the year.
