The Bushes
Popes did.

a single pope called a crusade and moved 3 of the most powerful kings in europe to take the Holy Land (the Levant)

Richard the Lionheart-King of England
Phillip II-King of France
Frederick Barbarossa-Holy Roman Emperor

EDIT: While on the way to the Holy Land, Barbarossa’s horse stumbled on a rock while crossing a river and the Emperor fell off his horse and into the river. Weighted by his armor and chain mail, he drowned. His son tried to keep the army together but many lost morale and deserted.

Phillip and Richard took the sea route and actually landed in the Levant and actually took a Muslim stronghold called Acre. After Phillip and Richard took Acre, Phillip sailed back to France and was looked down on for the remainder of his life deserting his fellow Christians in the Levant.

Richard had a lot of success in the Levant and was very close to Jerusalem but had to turn around when word reached him that his brother back home in England took the crown for himself. Richard ended up dying when a boy on a castle wall he was recapturing in one of his territories fired a crossbow bolt and killed him.

Ancient times like the Renaissance , middle ages etc....then that would be the pope...u could not be king or emperor without the blessing of the pope/church

Of course every once in a while the pope's hand was tied i.e during the end of the Templars, king Philip had clement by the balls so he had to banish them. But more times than not the pope had clout over the kings and emperors

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but couldn't a king just refuse what the pope wanted and use his army to overthrow the pope?

Yea, they could have the way more ruled was by deception, they sold indulgences etc and held hell over the head of the kings, Religion was big during those times so the kings and the people took it very seriously. Like a poster above said the pope had the pope to galvanize people for a holy way aka the crusades.

Over time the Church accumulated wealth so that also help their influence , on top of black mailing leaders that would go to confessionals and tell all of their wrong doings. The suposse power to forgive sins etc was very influential over the people

Pope boniface said behold i am Caesar, The RCC was and is a continuation of Pagan Rome

Hence the Pope is crowned with a triple crown, as king of heaven and of earth and of the lower regions
