well the league is crazy because I would have matched or signed him also. They pretty much had to or risk losing him for nothing.
I mean they could have pulled off a sign and trade
Honestly I think Myles Turner could have come close to matching Ayton's production on the Suns. He also has an ability to stretch with floor with his 3 point shooting that Ayton doesn't posses and is an elite shot blocker
Turner big downside is he's struggled to stay healthy.

Yeah the more I think about it this is a terrible contract. Ayton is mid af and shouldn't be making 30 mil in any world.

It makes sense for Phoenix to keep him.

I’m trying understand why the Pacers would want him at 30 million a year and other than pure desperation it makes no sense whatsoever

It’s like an Isaiah Thomas Knicks free agency move to overpay whoever is available
They couldn't offer him less as a RFA without doing Phoenix a favor.

Certain teams have no other choice but to overpay for talent in free agency because they won't go to those places any other way. The alternative is the try to win without the benefit of free agency at all and just try to keep hitting home runs in the draft, which is hard to do.

Now, the Pacers still have Turner and will probably just hold onto him, pair him with Jalen Smith and go forward with their backcourt and Mathurin and aim for the play-in. Even if the Ayton contract woulda been too much, it's hard to criticize a team for trying to add talent the only real way they can, because when better talents hit the market, there will be more competition for that guy and even if Indy had a max slot available, someone else would too and the Pacers may not be able to compete with that.

This whole situation is why the NBA is slightly goofy. Phoenix didn't want to pay him. The coach didn't really want him. Their highest paid player don't like him. The owner doesn't want to actually pay the luxury tax. He found a spot that wanted to pay him, but then Phoenix matched just to not lose a trade asset.

Silver was popping fly about the KD situation, but this ain't good either on the other side of it.
Essentially what you’re trying to say, they all fuking hate each other and still kept him

:russ:

The nba is fantastic

The pacers don’t have any reason to do that as they were just able to sign Ayton and move Turner for value. Now since the suns matched the offer the pacers still have turner and can decide what they want to do. This was smart on their part I probably would of found some manipulative salary/contract language but I can’t knock it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was done as a favor for Aytons agency.

Nahhh teams don't value Turner like that and they know that Indy doesn't either, so they're not going to offer much for him. The main reason why Indy should have moved him years ago. People are talking about Ayton and Phoenix being in an awkward situation when the situation with Turner and Indy is worse.
