The novelty (at the time) of southern folks hearing people who sounded like them gave No Limit at lot...a LOT...of support. BBTP also kept that New Orleans vibe in the mix, and that bounce translates damn near everywhere. Even Houston didn't have that kind of widespread appeal from their labels.

Some of those numbers are exaggerated though. Most No Limit artists were not selling 400-500K. Master P and Snoop were the bank's top sellers with 2 million and above. Silkk and Mystikal had two platinum albums. C-Murder went platinum. The soundtracks for I Got The Hook-Up and I'm Bout It went platinum. TRU had a double platinum album. Mia X, Fiend, Kane & Abel, and Mean Green all went gold. The Foolish soundtrack was gold and Westcoast Bad Boyz II went gold.
Soulja slim first 2 albums went gold too

Steady Mobbin didn't even get radio spins in the Bay yet they moved units on No Limit.

Ya. People would buy the lesser known No Limit releases just from seeing them advertised in the other No Limit albums they bought. They also stuck out like a sore thumb in stores with the colored spines and Pen-N-Pixel artwork. That was some genius marketing. Unfortunately it was quantity over quality as far as the music goes.

marketing, he was basically created the marvel cinematic universe in album form. He promoted all the albums that were coming out in a packet inside the album case. Kids like me were copping every no limit album because of the artwork and songs being played everywhere.

Yeah, the marketing was crazy. There are album covers burned into my mind... I can literally envision the Kane n Abel 'Am I My Brothers Keeper' (the lime green shirts), Mercedes 'Rear End' (that ass), Mr. Serv-On layin' in the casket, Lil' Soldiers poppin' out the box, etc... ain't heard them shyts a day in my life but got photographic memory of the ads :pachaha:

They didn't have a big fanbase. They only sold because of the NL logo on the back of the CD/cassette. Lil Italy prolly didn't even hit 50k, Skull and Big Ed never got near gold status, maybe around 200-300k in 98, still when you add up all these smaller acts, NL sold a shytton via genius marketing (as many others stated already), some really good work (Fiend, Mac, Mia, Slim, Mystikal, C, TRU had some excellent albums out, among others) and catering to the black folks/minorities instead of kissing cac booty (Will Smith, Puffy, Wyclef during that time)
