Probably gonna catch hell for this, but this is why I believe all sports contracts should be incentive laden. A base salary for every player, then with the more you play, more stats you put up, and more impact you make, the more money you make.

I know it will never happen, but theres just too many bums getting overpaid, and theres also a lot who are stuck in bad contracts and getting underpaid for their performances

Supply and demand. It's just boiled down to a select few when it comes to pro sports.

As for the bolded, you don't want that. You can put up stats and still not be good at your job. Ask Corey Maggette.

Bums as compared to other players in their league. This thread isnt about somebody on the street being better than somebody in a pro league, its about players being OVERPAID. Of course nobody is gonna turn down 20 mil to play a sport, thats not the point, its about teams overpaying players. Do you really think Rashard Lewis deserved that contract he got?
There are too many talented players that just dont give a fukk. They have a few good years, get that big contract, and say fukk it, i'm set for the rest of my life, I don't give a fukk about what I do on the court/diamond/field or whatever. Look at how many people's best years just happen to be during their contract years, they're playing their asses off to try to get that big contract. Teams overpay players, and get stuck with the contract because no other team is dumb enough to take that contract, and it sets the franchise back years.
Look at JaMarcus Russell, that lazy bum got over 39 mil from the Raiders, thats over 2 mil per touchdown, 5 mil for per win, and this fool aint even in the league anymore. Meanwhile, you got players in the league who bust their ass and actually contribute to the team, who will never even sniff half of the money he made.

owners would tell coaches to limit plays for players so they wouldn't have to pay. they kinda do it now. i know when Tebow took over for Denver the receivers were pissed because any incentive bonuses for them went out the window and it wasn't even on them.
im not mad at player contracts gets every penny you can

I just hate to see certain players get money they dont deserve. If someone gets a big contract and just dont give a fukk, its unfair to other people who actually bust theirs and want to win. Not only is it unfair to the other players, but its unfair to the teams. They could have spent that money/draft pick on someone who actually loves the game and wants to play to the best of their ability and win. I'm not trying to single out JaMarcus, but he's a prime example. He had the talent, but knew he was getting paid regardless. I cant be the only one who thinks his career would have took a different path if he actually had to work and prove himself for his

Bums being paid is the American dream.

I never hate on the players in these situations. They have to get as much money as they possibly can in a short period of time and I applaud them for getting those large deals.

The GM's are the ones who should be criticized for overpaying some guys. Most NBA GM's suck at their job, they get to stay with a team LONG after it's obvious they suck at their job and as soon as they're fired they get another job with another team.

except that sports isn't always a meritocracy. We've it before where guys with loads of talent or who is playing better at a particular time not get more playing time because a coach simply favors another player (Rafer Alston being forced to come off the bench during the finals in favor of Nelson immediately comes to mind).

i understand that. so what point are you trying to make...are you saying that coaches would bench players on purpose to keep them from earning their money? perhaps, on occasion, i guess.

there are ways to do it though. have tiers of salaries that players could be signed to, and then increased upon with incentives, not just one flat rate; thats too extreme. hire special arbitrators to travel with the teams to examine if there is fukkery, etc.
