Chris Pratt and Benedict Cumberbutch were/are TV actors
Yup. They get guys who are bubbling either on tv or have had small roles in movies and make stars out of them. Keeps those contracts to a low when you first start
Marvel movies pretty much set a actors career on fire. Doesn't matter how big or small the role.

Er Benedict Cumberbatch was in Star Trek: Into Darkeness, The Imitation Game, 12 Years a Slave and The Hobbit trilogy before being cast as Dr. Strange.
Chris Pratt was in Moneyball, Zero Dark Thirty, The Lego Movie and Her before getting Star-Lord in GotG.
These dudes had big parts in big/critically acclaimed movies before joining MCU. Yes, they may have been more well-known from TV but they were getting major parts in films as well, sometimes leads.
Pratt was still on Parks & Rec when he got the Star Lord role and Cumberbatch still does Sherlock. You can do movies and Tv at the same time.

You said they 'mostly cast unknowns'. Being a staple of a TV show + being in multiple high profile movies and starring in at least 1 doesn't qualify as unknown status IMO.
I think the only unknowns they've cast as the leads was Hemsworth and Hiddleson in Thor. Even then, they cast well-known actors around them like Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins.
That's normally the trend for super hero flicks since Superman. You cast an unknown or relatively unknown lead and put established actors around them. Christopher Reeves was mostly known as a soap opera actor so they put Gene Hackman and Marlon Brando in supporting roles
I am no joke counting down the days until this movie.
