First one was a lot better imo. Yeah visuals are great. But I just didn't get jiggy with the whole family aspect and did not care for the island/water tribe environments. Idk man, I'm Samoan and grew up in that kind of environment diving underwater and shyt so it didn't have no impact on me cuz I lived that shyt as a child through my adolescents.
Quartch was my favorite character in the first. But didn't like how they tried to soften him up with his Navi clone. And the fact he has a son? Where the fukk did that come from? And that cac ass runt was the most annoying character by far. Sully still a bytchass but is even shyttier father
If the first one was fern gully. This jaunt is definitely Moana, free willy, whale rider with your typical on the run action trope. I'm almost wanting to root for RDA
Aside from it dragging a bit in the middle while learning the sea stuff, this was pretty great and a lot more emotional. I dont think it's better than the first, but the character dynamics were better
The ending was sad
That said Spider gotta be the worst actor ever
The cgi on the navi skin amaze me. The closeup textures make it look so real
sam and zoe are not good actors. the children (including weaver) were actually better than the parents.
there is lots of monologue / narration in the movie. imagine what a difference it would have made if they were done by someone who was actually good at them. see shawshank for the example. or x-men/star trek.
i'll tell you now this movie is gonna age like milk
because its already turning in my brain
looks great, good adventure.
So, "Unobtainium" just doesn't matter anymore? That was already an embarassingly lazy mcguffin, but the first movie was about this mineral and its ability to be sold for billions and also somehow...save earth? And now its about a mystery goo that is from Mesozoic Sperm Whales' brain stems that 'stops aging' and that is explained in literally one line...? And their best way of getting it is the same level of sea-based poaching we do on earth now?
The storyline with the daughter having a seizure when she connects to the planet's god cloud...this was like 20% of the movie...just not explained, bailed on really...i guess that helps her speak to fish and breath water better? Unexplained. Why was she just looking in a hole in the sand?
Why are these different tribes very familiar with each other but still like low tier racist? 4 fingers is wild exotic and alien but you literally have fins for arms and we both have different tails??
Spider make up your fukkin' mind
Spider acts like and lives with Na'vi...sure but like...he knows about and is around a lot of humans right? I mean, Mowgli never really lived with humans...he is acting like a jungle boy for real...he is in a science lab all the time
Was Quaritch doing a Merle from Walking Dead impression?
Why are we still calling humans sky people? They know the deal right?
The future entries in this series might have to tighten up the story. We give technical marvels a lot of passes in story telling we really should reconsider...word to Christopher Nolan
I may need to read some articles on accusations of cultural appropriation. I think James Cameron means well, but lowkey I got a vibe of "alright, now let's do Polynesian aliens" with the water tribe. We off that native american. I'm Black so it's not really for me to speak on.
The water tribe sorta felt tacked on as a plot device. Design over depth. They were all very surface ironically enough.
The humans new tech comparatively was far more interesting and reveals Cameron's passion for underwater expeditions.
The kids were cool. Younger brother should become the main character on some Horus kick. The older son was low-key clowning when he released his siblings on the ship just before his death. I actually liked that angle, where you see the younger brother rising in his manhood due to being looked down on as an underdog. At that point in the film he was taking over and ends up saving Jake.
Spider's actor had some bad takes, his reactions to the whale getting gutted was terrible acting. Might be cool to see the character get an avatar body in a sequel.
Norm and the Breh were non factors completely. They had nothing for these guys this go round
Jake Sully really isn't growing as a character, his main function is to be the soldier/warrior. I didn't get the feeling that Jake really led his forest tribe and have any kind of plan for the eventual return of the humans. Hell he said himself that he didn't have anything, that they should just run. Guy was chilling when humans pulled up. Again, surviving son should take over as main character from here on out.
Grace's daughter was likeable and the mystery of her father could be interesting, we'll see where it goes.
What if Grace was knocked up by Jake's twin brother? That would indirectly make the girl genetically related to Sully and his ilk.
I'd give it 7/10. A somewhat predictable story and slow plot progression in the middle. The younger characters are compelling enough for me to see the third, but Jake and Neytiri didn't live up to their roles in the first film.
I'll catch it again. Box office numbers are impressive after 10 days.
The movie is a visual marvel. Just like the first one, felt like white folks wanting to live out their tribal fantasies and increased athletics like running and jumping since they want to be us so bad. Some scenes took entirely too long, and were drawn out just for Cameron to show off the world. Part of it I'm not mad at, but the movie could have been a lot shorter. The only reason the story went anywhere was because the kids kept getting in trouble going where they weren't supposed to go.
Of course the sixnine breh was gonna pull that shifty rat shyt at the end.
Nobody expected it to even come close to that number. However, keep in mind, In The Water is so far outpacing the first movie. It took 17 days for Avatar to reach a billion.
Of course it's not going to hit close to 3 billion with Covid out there and keep in mind it's not 2009/10 when the movie watching experience was way different.
The goal was for this movie was to make a profit so the last two movies can get the green light
