The script and pacing of A Wrinkle in Time were a mess but visually the movie was stunning so I have no doubt Ava would have delivered a beautiful movie.
There is also nothing about Ava as a director that makes me question whether she would have been committed to celebrating the African culture and diaspora in a way that is necessary for a Black Panther movie.
OK that's all fine but what are the chances she made a better movie that was as well received? I say extremely low as the movie was highly regarded and did great at the box office. Everything worked out for the best regarding BP. Saying so is no slight to Ava.

I'm not arguing that she would've made a better movie than Coogler just that she would have probably made a film that was just as good but in a different way.

Not sure why the knee-jerk reaction was to shyt on her or even why anyone felt the need to defend Coogler's movie when no one was attacking it or him.

I just disagree with the bolded. I don't like any of her movies better than BP. I think she could have made a good movie but 'as good'? No. BP theme wise is one of the best movies about the African Diaspora and how we relate to one another. Don't downgrade the achievement. Coogler went deep.

I was always curious on what exactly she didn't agree with. That article mentions scandal :hhh:
I'm happy with what we got from Coogler. Think its thematically the best MCU movie and one of the best comic book movies. Its technical flaws are disappointing, but as I posted before...shot in just 72 days/10 hour days on the film....Its a miracle it turned out as well as it did. I do wonder what Ava would have done...

Just curious of her vision.

Prolific posting :wow:
@obarth has learned well from me :ehh:

The nuances of Coogler's BP and Coates's BP are night and day tho. A shining supporting cast rallying around BP vs a cast that is trying to shine without him/to his detriment. Any miscalculations to the former are easier to adjust imo*.

When they asked Coogler how much Coates BP influenced the film, he said he never read it until after they were well into filming. He did say he appreciated Coates take, tho it wasn't the type of story they'd use for an MCU movie.

I have issues with Coogler's execution as well but I'll take what he delivered 10 out of 10 times given all the pressure and expectations.

*Now that sequel, I ain't giving Coogler leeway for shyt. Nygga better address all my grievances :birdman:
Low key I think Ava wouldn't have played ball as much. She probably knew she couldnt work under those restrictions (short time/just filming in ATL)

Ryan crafted something special when you really think about it. However, whether Ryan or Ava...I would love a true artistic vision of an unconqured country that isn't as "disneyfied"

On paper its one of the greatest stories ever. However, Coogler deserves credit being able to work within the sandbox.

:yeshrug: We'll never know, but I think slamming her for one bad movie that was crazy hard to adapt, and probably shouldn't have been in the first place, when she's obviously focused on lifting black people, especially black men up, is kinda wack and disengenous.
I think people forget Ava's office was right next to Ryan at Disney studios. They were very much supportive of each other and knew the importance of what they were attempting (just 2 of 3 black directors to take on a 100 million+ project)

I think Wrinkle is really bad and she bit off more than she could chew with that material (unadaptable). However, I also see that as a learning experience and look forward to New Gods. If WB REALLY lets her cook I can see how she could make a Selma/When They See Us level craft on an epic level.
