I liked the first Aunt Viv better, but I think the show going downhill was a result of the writing getting lazy and not the talents of the second Aunt Viv. However, maybe the 1st Aunt Viv knew the show was moving in a direction to make her character blander and that's why she got angry?

The show wasn't the highest rated comedy on NBC.

I mean I doubt the show was highly rated during its first season in a half. It came on while shows like Seinfeld, Frasier, Mad About You, Friends and Wings were on NBC.

The ratings dipped once Aunt Viv was replaced I mean I see a connection regardless if people want to admit it or not. She was important to the chemistry of the cast. It's clear the new Aunt Viv just didn't live up. Of course fans of the show continued on but it really wasn't the same in the last 3 seasons. Nobody saying it's not a Classic show but Will and many others want to try and act like the 1st aunt Viv wasn't important that's why they replaced her so easily. But they were wrong, the show wasn't the same without her.

1st 3 seasons > Last 3 seasons

dont just about all shows lose ratings from year-to-year?

fresh pince was on the same station as "different world", and their ratings dropped slightly every year despite the fact that the show's popularity & quality both increased every year(not counting the last year or so when the ratingds dropped too far. those were the best years tho, imo).

if its just a slight drop, then what does it matter? i dont recall anybody saying "i cant mess with this show anymore without janet hubert".

also, the show was much different in the last 3 seasons. it was more slap-stick for the most part while the 1st 3 seasons were a lil more serious in general.

i must admit, i think janet hubert helped bring that serious aspect to the show. the light-skinned aunt viv had no knowlegde-of-self and never dropped any gems.

Phil got soft as fukk once light skinned Viv came on. How do you go from rockin double breasted suits and threatening to put people under the court to wearing ugly-ass minor league-baseball-mascot-lookin sweaters with eggs on em?

Original Aunt Viv would have pushed his shyt back. Uncle Phil seems to be aggravated by Lou's presence more than the 2nd Aunt Viv. You would have thought uncle Phil was the blood brother of Will's Mom the way he cared.

yea, i remember janet hubert complaining about the show's direction in an article.

i must say(my bad if i already did) that she seemed to be the one holding the 'power of blackness' side of the show up.

I also agree with people saying The Original Aunt Viv had a stronger connection to Will cause of Will's Mom. It was like yes she moved up but she still had the "Philly" in her. It's just a horrible thing all around again I think they should of just wrote her out with a divorce or something. Hopefully there can be reunion with ALL of the cast cause for Will and Company to even act like the 1st Aunt Viv isn't a fan favorite is crazy.

Cosby, A Different World, and Cheers which were powerhouses were prominent its first 3 years on air.


the real comparison is how did the show do on Monday's at 8 (or 8:30, I cant remember. I know Blossom came on too).

And yeah, the original Aunt Viv was waaaaay better than the second, there's no comparison. She just had that whole strong, original woman aura about her that the second one just couldn't touch. She was funny as much as she was serious.
